OLD TOWN – Monday Night Football came to Victory Field, and what emerged was an offensive shootout as Belfast outscored Old Town 46-20 in a drizzle-soaked Pine Tree Conference Class B matchup.
Sean Leeman rushed 21 times for 130 yards and two touchdowns for the 3-1 Lions, while tight end Hugh Morse caught a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Andy Whalen, Marcus Nadeau added a touchdown run, and Travis Lee returned the second-half kickoff 78 yards for a score.
“We came together a lot better than we’ve been doing the last couple of weeks,” said Leeman. “Our offense hadn’t been doing that great, but everybody came together with the blocking and running.”
Belfast, which faces a big home test against 3-1 Leavitt of Turner Center in a game rescheduled for Saturday night, amassed 327 yards of total offense, 223 on the ground and 104 through the air as Whalen completed six of nine passes.
“We played well at times,” said Belfast co-coach Butch Richards, “and for a sloppy night, we were as sharp as we’ve been all year offensively except for the second half of the Gardiner game.”
Both teams could be excused if they were out of sync for this rare Monday night encounter.
Old Town had barely practiced since last Wednesday, when two students at the school were killed in a car accident. This game originally was scheduled to be played last Friday but was postponed in the aftermath of that incident.
“It was a tough week emotionally,” said Old Town coach Dan Baker.
And this marked Belfast’s second straight Monday game as their previous week’s game at Oak Hill of Sabattus was moved from Saturday to Monday due to inclement weather.
“It was good to come out through the changes in schedule and be able to focus and do what we needed to do, which was to improve,” said Richards.
But once this game settled down, it was an offensive showcase for both teams, with Old Town getting 137 rushing yards from junior quarterback Jarrett Lukas and 252 yards of total offense.
“We get closer and closer each week,” said Baker. “We’re little things away from being able to bust out and really play solid football against teams like Belfast. Our guys are starting to believe that they can play with teams like Belfast.”
Old Town (0-4) fumbled the opening kickoff, leading to a 3-yard TD run and a two-point conversion by Leeman 2:02 into the game.
Old Town drove 72 yards to get on the board, with a 47-yard option keeper by Lukas setting up a 4-yard run by Justin Morin to cut the gap to 8-6.
Belfast regained control with a 68-yard march capped when Leeman took a pitch to the right and then cut back against the grain for a 25-yard scoring run with 1:48 left in the period. Whalen hit Ben Felton with a two-point conversion pass to make it 16-6.
Whalen found Morse open in the right flat on fourth-and-five from the Old Town 10 as Belfast pushed its lead to 24-6 with 56 seconds left in the first half. Tyler Bowen provided the conversion rush.
Lee opened the third quarter by sprinting down the right sideline with the kickoff, and Leeman added the second of his three conversion runs to push the Belfast cushion to 32-6.
Old Town marched 63 yards for its second touchdown, a 39-yard keeper by Lukas with 10:12 left in the third.
Whalen hit a wide-open Morse for a 58-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-five on Belfast’s next series, with a Leeman rush making it a 40-14 game.
Lukas hit Travis Shaw with an 18-yard TD pass later in the quarter before Nadeau capped off the scoring with a 7-yard run with 2:41 left in the game.
