Man allowed to use firearm after arrest SAD 50 official can hunt despite charge

ROCKLAND – A judge amended bail conditions Monday for an SAD 50 administrator charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, allowing him to possess a firearm for hunting when more than 100 miles from Thomaston.

In 6th District Court, Judge William Anderson also lifted a bail condition that prohibited Edward Hastings, 50, of Thomaston from using or possessing alcohol or drugs and submitting to random searches and testing for substances.

On Sept. 9, Hastings allegedly brandished a firearm during a domestic dispute with his estranged wife, Trina Hastings, 37. After leaving his home, she reported the incident to police. He was called to the police station, then arrested and charged.

Hastings, 50, is Georges Valley High School’s assistant principal and athletic director. He has been employed by SAD 50 for 24 years. He remains employed pending the outcome of the court proceedings.

Outside the courtroom, his attorney, Eric Morse of Rockland, said the substance restrictions were never an issue and did not need to be imposed. Hastings has no criminal record, he said.

Morse and Assistant District Attorney Chris Fernald agreed upon the bail amendments, Morse told the judge. Hastings did not appear for Monday’s brief hearing.

When the judge asked about Hastings carrying a weapon while en route to hunting, Morse said that his client’s hunting companion would possess the weapon until they were at the hunting destination.

Hastings is scheduled to appear on the felony charge Oct. 5. He remains free on $10,000 bail. A hearing on a protection-from-abuse order sought by his wife is set for Oct. 14. She is represented by Waldoboro lawyer Peter Lynch.

Conditions of bail still prohibit Hastings from having contact with the victim and possessing a weapon and subject him to a random search for a weapon within 100 miles of Thomaston.
