Old Town has been named a winner in the first national competition to identify “100 Best Communities for Young People,” sponsored by The Alliance for Youth. The communities are being recognized for their commitment to provide healthy, safe and caring environments for young people. The River Coalition Inc. applied to the alliance to recognize the efforts undertaken by the communities of Alton, Bradley, Greenbush, Indian Island, Milford and Old Town to improve conditions for children. The only other community in the state to be recognized is Waterville. A Maine celebration will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at a place to be announced, and Gov. John Baldacci is expected to attend. A national celebration will be held on Nov. 2 in Washington, D.C. A list of award winners can be found at www.americaspromise.org.
