SHIRLEY – An 81-year-old Greenville woman was critically injured Tuesday afternoon when her vehicle collided with a loaded tractor-trailer on Route 15.

Lois Young suffered multiple traumas and was airlifted by LifeFlight helicopter after the 5:06 p.m. accident. She was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Her condition was unknown late Tuesday.

The accident occurred as Young left the Shirley Road and turned onto Route 15 into the path of a tractor-trailer driven by Michael Gorman, 53, of Hanover, Pa., according to Investigator Allen Emerson of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department.

Emerson said that both drivers were traveling alone. Gorman, who was not injured but was shaken, was transporting recyclable plastics for Kinard Trucking of Pennsylvania.

Traffic was tied up for some time by the accident.

Young’s vehicle, a 2001 Ford Taurus, was demolished, according to Emerson. He placed the damage to the tractor-trailer at about $30,000.

The accident scene is being reconstructed, Emerson said.
