Cheers to Bangor
Eat, drink and be merry this Saturday during downtown Bangor’s Autumn Afternoon. The follow-up to Oktoberfest will feature live music by the Aurora Jazz Project and the Frozen Swamp Choppers, food vendors and a beer garden featuring 30 beers. Rumor has it Gretel, aka Chris Geaghan of the Whig & Courier in braids and a dirndl, could make a guest appearance as a barmaid. The event will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, in West Market Square.
Easy as pie
If your pie crust tastes more like cardboard than pastry, head to The Belfast Co-op from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, for a free demonstration. Jennifer Armstrong, Cori Shooter and Larason Guthrie, three bakers with distinctive styles, will share tips at the free session. For information, visit www.belfast.coop.com or call 338-2532. You can show off your new skills from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, during the annual Belfast Pie and Story Festival. The pie contest includes the following categories: most original pie, most beautiful pie, most local ingredients pie, yummy mess and best overall. Upper crusts
Been waiting for apple season since last November? Enter your apple pie in the baking contest sponsored by Monroe Salt Works and The Ellsworth American. Contestants can check in from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Monroe Salt Works, 150 High St. in Ellsworth. Awards will be given for the top five pies, and pie slices will be sold for $1 each at 3 p.m. All proceeds will benefit local charities.
