Brooks Historical Society Museum President Betty Littlefield invites you to the society’s first open house at the Pilley Homestead, 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, at the Brooks museum.
Given to the historical society in early June by Radio Hall of Famer Robert “Bob” Elliott and his wife, Lee Elliott, of Cundy’s Harbor and New York City, the ancestral home was last occupied by Bob Elliott’s cousin, the late Louise Pilley.
The house, circa 1818, was the site of the first Brooks Post Office in 1819, Littlefield said, and “is presumed to be one of the oldest houses in Brooks, which was settled in 1799.”
Elliott’s great-grandfather, Hiram Pilley, purchased the home in 1863, and Elliott spent many happy summer vacations there.
The museum offers “a glimpse of the lifestyle and furnishings of the early 1900s, with its kitchen, dining room, parlor and bedroom exhibits and displays,” Littlefield said.
Raffle tickets for two handcrafted pens made of wood from the USS Constitution and the Boston Garden’s parquet floor, donated by Stan and Andrea Littlefield Lucien of Maine Heritage Inc. in Old Town, will be on sale, and light refreshments will be served.
For more information, or to donate memorabilia and artifacts to the historical society, call Littlefield, 722-3633, or McLaughlin, at the Brooks town office, 722-3254.
