Caldwell, Porter help Brewer roll Lynx, MCI record wins

BREWER – Quarterback Ricky Porter carried the ball 11 times for 119 yards and a touchdown Friday night, leading the Brewer Witches to 34-0 Pine Tree Conference Class B homecoming football victory over Hampden Academy.

In the third quarter, Porter ran 49 yards for a touchdown on an outside option, a play coach Ed Ortego believed sealed the game.

“We really started to pull away in the second half,” said Ortego. “After that play, we knew we had control of the game.”

With the help of the offensive line, the Witches were able to rush for 330 yards.

“Our line was blocking really well and our reads were good,” said fullback Ben Caldwell, who finished with 70 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Matt Wilson recovered a Bronco fumble in the second quarter, returning it for a 61-yard score.

“Our defense was stellar,” said Caldwell, “especially in the first half.”

The Witches defense was able to step in the way of Chris Morris four times during the game, with cornerback Ricky Adams picking off two passes.

“The kids played hard tonight,” said Ortego. “I thought we came out pretty fast. [Hampden] is a big, physical team and we knew they would come at us real hard.”

Mattanawcook 20, Bucksport 6

At Bucksport, the Lynx rushed for 154 yards to help the team remain undefeated.

Duncan Markie led the way for Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln with 19 carries for 90 yards, while Randy Reed rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown.

Quarterback Dylan Hanscom completed 5 of 7 passes, including a 14-yard touchdown completion. Hanscom also picked off a Bucksport pass, returning it for a 50-yard score.

Joe Robicheau guided the Golden Bucks offense with 96 yards on 30 carries. The Bucks tallied 180 total yards.

At Pittsfield, the Huskies ran for 267 yards and threw for 230 yards to roll past Dexter.

Victor Quint completed a 51-yard pass to Adam Connors in the first quarter to ignite Maine Central Institute early. Quint also completed a 43-yard pass to Connors in the third quarter.

On the other side of the ball, Quint picked off Dexter quarterback Steven Robinson.

At Old Orchard Beach, Dustin Bouchard ran for 157 yards on 24 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Seagulls past the Tigers.

Old Orchard Beach rushed for 306 yards with no passing yards. Mike Marsh finished with 152 yards on 17 carries, including a 33-yard touchdown run.

Andrew Weiss paced Rockland with 95 rushing yards and two conversion rushes. The Tigers finished with 187 rushing yards on 33 carries.

Livermore Falls 26, Madison 12

At Madison, Ryan Webster ran for two, 4-yard touchdowns and one for 19 yards to carry the Andies past the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs got on the board first when Josiah Wing connected on a 58-yard pass to Tim Fortin. Wing was going to punt, but the snap sailed over his head. He tracked it down and found Fortin.

The Andies responded with three unanswered touchdowns, two by Webster and another 19-yard run by Mark O’Shea. The Andies finished with 259 rushing yards on 55 carries and quarterback Mike Nichols completed 3 of 5 passes for 50 yards.

Madison added its second touchdown with 1:06 left in he first half when Woody Noyes ran one in from 37 yards.

Fortin paced the Madison defense with 17 tackles while D.J. Dorion had eight and Ryan Carpenter, Garrick Brown and Alex Grover had seven apiece.
