Chase, Williams carry Husson by Mount Ida

BANGOR – It was a perfect Homecoming for the Husson College Eagles.

The Eagles gave approximately 500 fans a memorable performance as they scored on all six of their first-half possessions en route to a 62-14 triumph over Mount Ida of Newton, Mass.

“Without question, this was the best game in the history of Husson football,” said Gabby Price, the Eagles head coach since the school re-instituted the program three years ago. “It just seemed like everything went right. Our young men did a terrific job.”

Mustangs coach Ed Sweeney was impressed.

“They did a great job executing. They played a near-perfect first half and they didn’t have a turnover the whole game,” said Sweeney, whose Mustangs fell to 1-4. “We didn’t play very well.”

Junior quarterback David Chase of Sabattus completed 13 of 21 passes for 203 yards and four touchdowns, including an 11-for-13 showing for 175 yards in the first half with TD throws to Kyle Poisionner (21 yards), James Dobson (36 yards), and Jeremy Shorey (6 yards). He connected with Ryan Leon on a 16-yarder in the third quarter.

Freshman running back Julius Williams ran for 125 yards on 20 carries and scored on runs of 28 yards and 1 yard in the first half.

Freshman Leon added 52 yards on six carries with a TD run of 11 yards. Jason Jack had a 1-yard TD plunge to cap Husson’s first-half scoring before Mount Ida’s Michael Mormile scored on a 1-yard run.

Scott Curtis added a 13-yard TD run at the end of the game after scintillating Mount Ida tailback Antwan Harris had run 4 yards for a TD.

“We were all counting on this game to turn our season around,” said Williams, whose Eagles are 1-2.

“The line blocked great. The passing game was working. The coaches called a perfect game and the defense came to play. It was a great effort by everyone,” Williams added.

“They just pounded the ball on every play and never gave up. They fought for every yard they earned,” said Mount Ida inside linebacker George Abele.

Husson offensive left tackle Louis Avent said, “They were a little undersized up front. Their ‘backers were good and they were fast, but we were able to overpower their line and get to their backers. And our receivers, Kyle [Poisionner], Dobson, and Colby [Horne] blocked really well.”

Harris was one of the few bright spots for Mount Ida as he ran for 187 yards on 30 carries and added 67 kickoff return yards. He ran for 377 yards against Becker College last week.

Williams opened the scoring by starting right, changing direction, and galloping around the left end en route to a 28-yard run that capped an eight-play, 67-yard drive.

“When I ran over there, I saw the free safety had cheated over to that side, so I cut it back and Kyle [Poisionner] made a great block,” said Williams.

The youthful Mustangs responded with a nine-play, 60-yard drive but third-string quarterback and converted wide receiver Charles Caughman, replacing the injured P.J. Matthews and Matt Marshall, was picked off in the end zone by strong safety Jon Tefft.

It was all Husson after that.

Poissionner’s TD reception on a down-out-and-up route finished off a five-play, 80-yard drive; Williams went in from the 1 to conclude a 13-play, 74-yard march; and the speedy Dobson blew by cornerback Eric Tabb for his 36-yard TD reception on the first play of the drive. Also, Dobson connected with Shorey on a slant-in and Jack capped a four-play, 17-yard drive set up by a blind-side sack by linebacker Bobby Gilbert which forced a fumble recovered by Jon Benson.

Gilbert (6 tackles, 2 assists), Ron Morse (6 tackles), Shane Rogers (2 sacks), and Tefft (2 interceptions) led Husson’s defense, while Steve DeLeon (5 tackles, 3 assists) paced Mount Ida.
