Colby College and Bowdoin College both improved to 2-0 with New England Small College Athletic Conference football wins over Middlebury and Amherst Saturday.
The Colby White Mules defeated the Panthers 20-7 and extended a first-string defensive shutout string in the process. The first team defense hasn’t given up a touchdown this season. Colby also won despite losing starting quarterback Justin Smith of Rockland.
Bowdoin managed to remain unbeaten despite being outgained 399 total yards to 139.
In other NESCAC action, the Tufts College Jumbos pounded Bates College 34-7.
Colby 20, Middlebury 7
At Middlebury, Vt., Colby backup QB John Bateman came in and completed 15 of 28 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns.
Cornerback Mike Bracco led the defense with two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), six tackles, and two pass breakups. Brian Liberty and Josh Berman each had eight tackles while Conor Sullivan had two sacks. Aaron Stepke led the offense with 73 yards on 21 carries.

Bowdoin 16, Amherst 13
At Amherst, Mass., the Bowdoin Polar Bears made Amherst pay for seven turnovers and beat the Lord Jeffs for the first time since 1998.
Bowdoin picked off Amherst quarterback Nick Kehoe three times and returned one for a touchdown in the first quarter.
Amerst had a chance to take the lead late and drove deep into Bowdoin territory before fumbling the ball away to the Bears on a first-down run. The Jeffs got the ball back with 2:14 to play for one last try, but Kehoe was sacked by Zach Hammond on 4th-and-12 to ice the win.
Ngai Otieno gained 184 yards on 26 carries and Dom Cama had 109 on 25 for Amherst.
Bowdoin sophomore running back Jeff Smith had 45 yards on 11 carries and Dave Donahue had 17 tackles, an interception and touchdown return, and two fumble recoveries.

At Lewiston, Casey D’Annolfo completed 16 of 23 passes for 255 yards and four touchdowns – three to junior wide receiver Brian VonAneken – to lead the Jumbos past the Bobcats.
Freshman running back William Forde gained 55 yards and scored a touchdown on seven carries for Tufts. VonAneken had five catches for 100 yards. The Jumbos had 407 total yards.
Junior wideout Dylan McNamara caught six passes for 56 of Bates’ 183 total yards.

At Boston, goalkeeper Chris Williard made four saves on 17 shots for the 1-6-2 Huskies in a scoreless draw Saturday.
Paul Maniscalco saved six of 17 shots for the 6-3-1 Beacons to earn the shutout.
St. Josephs 2, Mitchell 1
At Standish, Harrison Deah scored the game-winning goal for the Monks with three minutes remaining in regulation Saturday.
The score was assisted by Kevin Hageman. Joe Valente tied up the game on a penalty kick 30 minutes into the second period.
Michael O’Brien made five saves on 15 shots for 4-5 Mitchell. Brian white saved three of four shots for 3-4-1 SJC.
Middlebury 4, Colby 0
At Middlebury, Vt., four Panthers notched goals to help blank the 3-3 Mules Saturday.
Brodie MacDearmid, Gabe Wood, Derek Cece and Vandy Shanholt all scored for 6-0 Middlebury. Keeper Josh Kahane made five stops for Colby.
MMA 2, UM-Machias 0
At Castine Saturday, Alan Alexander scored both of the Mariner goals to help boost the team’s record to 6-3-1.
Both scores came in the second half, with assists from Jon Pynduss and Mark Knight. Josh Heath of Bangor earned the shutout with three saves.
Chris Proctor saved five of 20 shots for the 2-3-1 Clippers.
Lyndon State 2, UM-Fort Kent 1
At Lyndonville, Vt., Mike Thatcher scored two goals to lead Lyndon State College by UMFK Saturday.
Jeff Giroux turned away eight of 11 shots for the 6-6 winners..
Robert Allen scored an unassisted goal with 31 minutes left in the second half for 3-5 UMFK. Scott Clency made three saves on 12 shots.
Women’s soccer
Maine 1, New Hampshire 0
At Durham, N.H. Sunday, Maureen McHugh’s unassisted goal with 21 minutes and 25 seconds left gave the University of Maine their first America East conference win this season.
Jasmine Phillips made two saves on eight UNH shots for the shutout. Maine improves to 6-4-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play.
Julie Randall made four saves on 13 Maine shots and is now 6-4-1 overall.
USM 4, UMass Boston 0
At Gorham, Liz Brunton scored two goals to lead the University of Southern Maine to victory on Saturday.
Caitlin Brown and Julia Cyr both added a goal for the 7-2 Huskies. Devin Edwards, Sarah Shortill, Dianna Thibaudeau, and Kara Higgins each had an assist. Mindy Morneault stopped three of nine shots.
Denise Ridge made eight saves on 21 shots for 2-6-1 University of Massachusetts at Boston.

At Middlebury, VT, Kim Walker scored on an Ainsley Close assist at 77:57 to tie the game for Middlebury College on Saturday.
Adele Plunkett made five saves for 2-2-2 Middlebury.
Laura Williamson scored at 18:47 on a Meridith Blascovich assist for 4-1-1 Colby College. Liza Benson made four saves.
Bates 3, Husson 1
At Lewiston, Becky MacDonald broke a 1-1 tie with eight minutes left in the game to give the Bobcats the lead for good.
Jen Marino put 6-2 Bates on the board first, while Kim Alexander sealed the win with less than a minute left in the second period.
Meredith Homer tied the score in the second half for the 5-6 Braves when she connected on a pass from Elissa Gordon. Leah Drew saved nine of 30 attempts.
Nini Spalding made three saves on five shots for the Bobcats.
USM 2, St. Joe’s 1
At Standish, senior Liz Brunton scored a pair of goals in the first half to lead the Huskies past the Monks.
Megan Willette put St. Joseph’s on the board by nailing a penalty kick with six minutes left in regulation. Lindsay King stopped eight of 14 shots for the 5-4 Monks.
Mindy Morneault made four saves on eight shots for the Huskies, who improve to 8-2.
Volleyball
Maine 3, UMBC 0
At Baltimore, Shannan Fotter had 15 kills and Jody Connacher added 16 digs to help lead the University of Maine past the University of Maryland Baltimore Country 30-24, 30-16, 30-26 on Sunday.
Lindsay Allman had 12 digs for the 5-8 Black Bears and Leah Guidinger had 11 kills. Shelly Seipp had 42 set assists.
Sarah Ball had 11 kills for 6-11 UMBC and Christine Skala added 11 digs.
