Orono police arrested a local man early Sunday after a chase from the Bear Brew Pub on Main Street where the man reportedly took a bottle of alcohol and then ran out of the pub.

James Murphy, 21, led police on a brief chase along Mill Street and parts of Oak Street before officers cornered him in a resident’s yard, Orono police Sgt. Josh Ewing said Sunday.

Bear Brew employees said Murphy took a gallon bottle of Kahlua liquor and ran when confronted about it. Orono police officers in the area followed Murphy on foot. He dropped the Kahlua bottle along the way.

Ewing said witnesses claimed that Murphy had come and gone from the bar a few times before the alleged theft, and the officer suspected he may have taken other items.

Murphy was taken to Penobscot County Jail where he was charged with theft. He already was on probation for failure to pay fines and had a previous conviction for trafficking in dangerous knives, Ewing said.

A Bangor police officer arrested a man early Saturday morning at Eastern Maine Medical Center after the man refused to submit to a blood test and then harassed hospital employees.

Bryant Gray, 47, of Orland reportedly had been involved in an accident and was suspected of driving while intoxicated when Bangor police Officer Kerry Libby arrived at EMMC to witness the blood test.

Gray refused the test several times and eventually was arrested for disorderly conduct. After Libby placed him in handcuffs, Gray broke free and had to be forced to the ground.

Gray was taken to Penobscot County Jail, but he could also face charges of operating under the influence out of Hancock County.

An Orono man faces several charges stemming from an incident early Sunday morning during which he went to the apartment of his ex-girlfriend and assaulted her, police said.

Matthew Winters, 23, had been issued a protection from harassment order about a week ago, but he went to the woman’s apartment anyway, Orono police Sgt. Josh Ewing said Sunday.

The ex-girlfriend let Winters in, at which point he grabbed her by the arms and began calling her nasty names, according to the woman’s roommate, who called police.

Winters left, but Orono police found him at his own apartment not long after receiving a call. He denied assaulting his ex-girlfriend but was arrested and charged with aggravated criminal trespass, assault, criminal mischief and harassment.
