Bangor

Breakfast of Champions

The Maine Women’s Policy Center will hold its annual Breakfast of Champions 7:30-9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Spectacular Event Center, Griffin Road. The theme of is Women in the Workplace.

Guest speaker will be Marjorie Stockford, consultant on advancing women in leadership positions in American society. She is the author of “The Bellwomen,” a book about the class action law suit against AT&T which resulted in a $38 million settlement that benefited 15,000 employees, more than 13,000 of them women, and changed perceptions of roles in the workplace.

Small business course

Penquis Community Action Program is offering a free Incubator Without Walls small-business course 7-9 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 13 to Feb. 2, at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow St.

The Incubator Without Walls course provides entrepreneurs with valuable resources and skills necessary for creating and managing a small business. The course and business training manual are free. An application is required. For information and application, call 973-3642 or 564-7116.

Real estate seminar

BANGOR – The Maine Real Estate and Development Association will be the host for a Bangor-Area Breakfast Seminar, “Purchasing Real Estate with IRA Funds,” 7:30-9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Holiday Inn, 404 Odlin Road. Bangor Savings Bank is the sponsor of the event.

The seminar will focus on alternative investing with self-directed IRAs. Discussions will include a general introduction to purchasing real estate with IRA funds, Internal Revenue Service-prohibited transactions, and the logistics of managing an IRA-owned property.

Sandy Reese of PENSCO Trust Co. will outline the basics. Brent Singer, attorney at the law offices of Rudman & Winchell LLC, will speak about three typical investment structures used by IRAs to invest in real estate. Accountant Lee Chick of Berry Dunn McNeil & Parker will discuss the “big picture,” including income tax consequences.

Registry for child care

Judith D’Agostino-Nabozny, director and owner of Ms. Judith’s Home Preschool, has been named to the Maine Registry by Maine Roads to Quality: Child Care and Early Education Career Development Center at the Muskie School.

The registry recognizes D’Agostino-Nabozny’s experience, training, education and volunteer contribution to the early childhood education profession. She is required to document ongoing annual training in child care and early education to remain in the voluntary registry, which is designed to promote high quality child care and early education for children and their families.

D’Agostino-Nabozny has opened a preschool program to a small group of children in her home, incorporating a blend of Maria Montessori and Reggio Emilia philosophies. She has 27 years of experience.

She holds an associate’s degree in human services and is working on a bachelor’s degree. She holds a certificate of training from the Child Care Leadership Institution. She has eight years’ experience working in Montessori schools, and is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children and its affiliates, New England AEYC and Maine AEYC.

40th anniversary

Green Acres Kennel Shop, 1653 Union St., will celebrate its 40th year in business in October. The date also marks the 10th anniversary of the purchase of the shop by current owners Don and Paul Hanson. A day of celebratory activities is planned for Saturday, Oct. 8:

. Recall clinic, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., an opportunity to learn how to teach dogs to come reliably with help from the Green Acres training staff.

. Introduction to Chinese medicine and acupuncture for pets, 10-11 a.m. Dr. Mark Hanks from the Veazie Veterinary Clinic will discuss the role of Chinese medicine acupuncture in modern veterinary care.

. Walking politely clinic, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

. Communicate with your dog through calming signals, 2-3 p.m.

Space in the educational sessions is limited, and participants are urged to pre-register by sending a $5 registration fee to reserve a spot. Registration fees will be donated to the Bangor Humane Society’s Shed and Emily Fund. Walk-ins will be accepted as space permits.

Craig and Tara Smith have opened their pool installation and products store, Boulderz, Poolz & Spaz, after spending a year installing pools. The business is located at 39 Sparks Ave.

The retail store offers products including above-ground pools, spas, complete chemical lines for pools and spas, parts and accessories. Services include pump and filter repair, seasonal maintenance plans, pool and spa openings and closings, pool installations, liner patching and replacements, and pool and spa inspections.

The company also performs pool inspections for those purchasing a home with an existing swimming pool.

Direct importer-distributor

Solo USA President David Longfield announced that RD Faulkner Corp. of Brewer has been selected as the New England, New York City and Long Island, N.Y., direct importer-distributor of Solo power equipment.

In the power equipment business since 1956, RD Faulkner Corp. is one of the oldest and most well-established businesses in the United States, company officials said. The company will import containers of Solo chainsaws, trimmers, blowers, brush mowers, tillers and other products directly from Germany to its 40,000-square-foot distribution center in Brewer.
