Kiwanis lauds MacKay’s work for community

BANGOR – The Bangor Breakfast Kiwanis Club presented its annual Charles Sullivan Memorial Community Service Award to John MacKay on Sept. 22 at its Thursday breakfast meeting.

A resident of the Bangor area since 1968, MacKay served a long career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel. After leaving military service in 1972, he worked in support services at Community Health and Counseling Services in Bangor, and later operated a home care supply firm, Mac-Lin Inc.

MacKay also has been active as a volunteer in many area organizations, including the United Way of Eastern Maine, Penquis CAP, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society, for which he has maintained an inventory of durable medical equipment and supplies for free loan to disabled individuals.

MacKay has also served on the boards of St. Mary’s School and John Bapst Memorial High School. He was one of the incorporators of JBMHS in 1980 when the former Catholic school was closed by the Diocese of Portland and re-opened as a nonsectarian private school.

The Charles Sullivan Community Service Award is presented each year by the Bangor Kiwanis Breakfast Club in recognition of outstanding community service by an individual. It is named in memory of Charles Sullivan, a longtime educator at Husson College in Bangor. Sullivan was a past president and charter member of the club, and is remembered for his own long history of community service in Bangor.
