Sectional meet cancelled

For the first time in it’s 57-year history, the Sectional meet has been cancelled outright.

The meet, scheduled for Saturday at Old Town High School, had been postponed once due to the death of two OTHS students in an auto accident last month.

“I’ve been on the phone all evening and there are just no dates left we can run it,” said meet director and OTHS cross-country coach Rod White. “We’ve never had to cancel or even move it before, but I guess it just wasn’t meant to be this year.”

White said parts of the sectional course were simply too wet or dangerous to run the race and those parts couldn’t be properly fixed until the steady rain stopped, but there was no guarantee that would happen in the near future.

Golf

State meet postponed

Steady rain is wreaking havoc on the high school sports schedule and the sport of golf is no exception.

Saturday’s team championship at Natanis Golf Course was postponed to Monday, but the unceasing rain has forced the Maine Principals’ Association to postpone it once again and combine it with the individual boys championships next Saturday, again in Vassalboro.

Registration will again be at 9 a.m. with play starting at 10 a.m. All three classes will be in action at the 54-hole course. The individual girls championships have been postponed indefinitely.

“We’ll make a decision on that,” said MPA representative Jerry Durgin. It’s more complicated with them because some of them play on teams and all three classes are represented among the 15 girls involved. We’re going to try to find an alternate date to hold them at Natanis.”
