PORTLAND – Former UMaine hockey player Dustin Penner has been sent down to the AHL’s Portland Pirates from its NHL affiliate, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

Penner, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound right wing, made the Ducks’ opening roster, but has not appeared in a regular-season game after playing five preseason games and recording a goal and three assists.

Penner, 23, appeared in 77 games last season with Cincinnati of the AHL where he scored 10 goals and had 18 assists.

Penner played at UMaine in 2003-04 while racking up 11 goals and 12 assists. He also scored the game-winning goal in a national semifinal game.
