Saturday night will feature a most unusual, and most delightful, Dover-Foxcroft 2005 Concert Series. The series benefits the Center Theatre and Southern Piscataquis County Chamber of Commerce.

The honor of your presence is requested not only for a wonderful evening of comedy, but also to witness the wedding of Dr. Raymond Fluke and Janet Case.

The performance that evening by the Maine Hysterical Society features actors, musicians and humorists Randy Judkins, Barney Martin and Steve Underwood. It begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Center Theatre on Main Street in Dover-Foxcroft.

The Fluke-Case wedding ceremony, explained series co-chairman Russ Page, follows the performance, “and we usually plan to have the folks out of there by 10 p.m.”

A newcomer to the area, Fluke is originally from London and moved to Van Buren in 2001. On the staff at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft, he works at clinics in Guilford and Corinna.

Case, who moved to Maine from Canada in 2000, is a physical therapist working in Skowhegan.

Page explained the couple, who have many colleagues but not a lot of close friends, decided they’d like to have lots of guests share this happy occasion, so they approached Judkins and then the series organizers who agreed that their ceremony would be a welcome addition to this fundraiser.

Tickets for the comedy show are $12 in advance and $15 at the door and are available at Moosehead Messenger in Greenville and Mr. Paperback and Moosehead Factory Outlet in Dover-Foxcroft.

This Saturday night in Dover-Foxcroft will certainly be one to remember.

Carol Lackedy has informed us that a casino night to benefit Children’s Miracle Network of Eastern Maine Healthcare is 7-11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at the Muddy Rudder Restaurant in Brewer.

The event includes the games of wheel of fortune, craps, color squares, black jack and poker. You can purchase 40 chips for $5.

Prizes will be awarded to the top five chip holders. Prizes range from a spray-on truck bed liner valued at $435, to a $50 restaurant gift certificate.

Kathy Tenga-Gonzalez reports that River City Cinema Society, in collaboration with Penobscot Theatre Company, is offering two special presentations about homosexuals and the movie industry.

“Celluloid Closet” is 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at the Bangor Opera House, 131 Main St.

This documentary by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman “chronicles the way movies have portrayed homosexuals for the past 100 years and how these images, both positive and negative, have helped shape America’s attitudes toward gays,” she wrote.

Among those interviewed are Susan Sarandon, Tony Curtis, Shirley MacLaine and Tom Hanks.

The film is based on the 1981 book by Vito Russo.

“The Wedding Banquet” is a comedy about a gay Taiwanese man, successfully and happily living in New York City, whose parents back home want him to marry and produce a grandchild, so he makes a bargain with a young, Chinese girl who wants to stay in the U.S.

This film, in English and Mandarin with English subtitles, is 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Bangor Opera House.

Admission for each production is $5, and those who attend either will receive a $2 discount off PTC’s coming production, “The Laramie Project.”

I know a similar program attracted a great deal of interest in the Bangor area, so older folks in the Katahdin Valley should be happy to learn that Katahdin Valley Health Center of Patten is offering a Medicare D Informational Meeting at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in the conference room of Katahdin Federal Credit Union on Crystal Road in Island Falls.

Aroostook Area Agency on Aging Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage Specialist Tammy DeLong will be the presenter for this educational session that will cover the rules of Medicare Part D, the new prescription coverage portion of Medicare.

There is no charge to attend, and anyone enrolled in Medicare is invited as well as those assisting others who participate in Medicare.

After the presentation, you will have an opportunity to ask questions and receive additional information.
