Orrington teen plans benefit show

ORRINGTON – With help from a newly founded nonprofit organization, Teen Grace Music, and others, 15-year-old Kristyn Murphy of Orrington is organizing a Youth Hurricane Relief Concert to benefit the victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Area youth who would like to share their musical talents with the community are encouraged to sign up and join the event. The youth-oriented concert will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at East Orrington Congregational Church.

Paul Dupuis, one of the “Breakfast Flakes” from radio station Q106.5, has agreed to be the master of ceremonies for the show.

“We have had quite a few people sign up already,” Murphy said. “We all know that hurricanes Katrina and Rita have left a devastating disaster behind. It is great to see other area youth take part in an event like this. However, we are still looking for people who would like to share their musical gifts with the community.”

Murphy, a performer, said she believed it was important to encourage youth and give them a chance to share their talents with the community. Those who already have signed up to be in the concert include the Center Drive Singers and a local band, Modern Day Jeremiah.

Murphy has given solo performances throughout Maine since the age of 8. She recently won the Central Maine Egg Festival scholarship pageant princess title and has danced many solos with the Bangor Youth Ballet. She is a sophomore at John Bapst Memorial High School and plans to do more solo singing and continue to encourage others to perform.

Admission to the Youth Hurricane Relief Concert is free. A donation will be collected for hurricane victims. Those interested in taking part in the event may call Kristyn or Marylee Murphy at 825-3840.
