Winslow whips Brewer Witches Bellows paces Black Raiders defense

BREWER – At 5-foot-6, 195 pounds, Brandon Bellows isn’t the biggest player on the field for the Winslow High football team.

But the senior middle linebacker had the biggest hit of the game to cap off an early goal-line stand, then led the Black Raiders’ defense to a shutout performance as the defending Eastern Maine Class B champions whipped Brewer 21-0 at Doyle Field on Friday night.

“It’s just a job of execution and getting it done,” said Bellows, “and that’s what we came here to do, to get it done.”

Winslow, which also shut out Brewer here in the 2004 EM final, improved to 7-0 heading into next Saturday’s regular-season finale against archrival Waterville.

Brewer, which had won four straight since a Week 2 loss at Waterville, dips to 5-2 and will play at Belfast next Friday night in its final game before the playoffs.

The Witches threatened to score almost immediately, as Zach Wilson broke a third-and-three run for 49 yards to the Winslow 2 on the first offensive series of the game, thanks in part to a big downfield block by Kaleb Roberts.

But the drive, and Brewer’s momentum, ended there.

Stephen Siviski and Kevin McCabe stopped Wilson for a 1-yard loss on first down. Ricky Porter then gained 2 yards back to the 1 before Wilson was stopped for no gain on third down. On fourth down, Porter attempted a quarterback sneak, but got nowhere as Winslow tackles Kevin Harrison and Barrett Hoskins collapsed the line and Bellows went over the top to make sure no one crossed the goal line.

“We pushed down their offensive line and got a big stop,” said Bellows. “We needed one there and we pulled through.”

Winslow got the ball 99 yards away from a touchdown of its own, but needed just six plays to take control of this game. John Goulette did most of the work with an 80-yard run down the right sideline to give the Black Raiders a 7-0 lead with 3:53 left in the first quarter.

“Basically we had great movement on the line, things opened up, and luckily I just broke it,” said Goulette, who finished with a game-high 113 yards on seven carries. “A big thing for us was that there wasn’t a momentum swing for us after they got their long run. We kept our heads in the game, we didn’t let it bother us. It was just another down, and we kept playing.”

Brewer never got inside the Winslow 45 after the first play of the second quarter, partly the result of Winslow’s relentless defense and partly of its own doing – the Witches committed eight penalties and five turnovers.

“If you look at the sloppiness of our play, that’s the big thing,” said Brewer coach Ed Ortego. “We didn’t play well. We had an easy touchdown and they stuffed us. Then we have them where they have 99.8 million yards to go, and they score. But the game’s not over, we just didn’t play much better from that point on.”

Winslow also limited Porter – the second-leading rusher in the Pine Tree Conference Class B ranks entering the night – to just 15 yards on eight carries.

“I don’t think you can ever negate Porter, but we just wanted to slow him down,” said Winslow coach Mike Siviski. “Maybe another part of it is that option is an integral part of our game, we run that and the kids understand the option. So when Brewer runs it, maybe we’re a little better prepared for it.”

Bellows recovered a Porter fumble at the Brewer 30 to set up Winslow’s second score, an 11-yard pass from Stephen Siviski to McCabe with 6:41 left in the first half.

Another Winslow defensive stand, this one at midfield late in the third quarter when Goulette and Ryan Cosgrove stopped Wilson for no gain on fourth-and-a-foot, set up Winslow for a 50-yard drive that culminated when Siviski hit Goulette over the middle for a 14-yard touchdown pass with 10:39 left in the game.

Wilson led Brewer offensively with 18 carries for 103 yards, while fullback Ben Caldwell added 62 yards on 11 tries.
