What were they thinking?

The engineers of the city of Bangor installed four-way stop signs at the intersection of Juniper and Howard streets last week. This dangerous action is apparently another device to relieve the traffic situation between Mount Hope and Stillwater avenues.

Without benefit of at least a flashing yellow light, very few drivers are even acknowledging the newly installed stop signs on Howard Street at the intersection. That particular intersection just happens to be a crossing to the park where children cross every few minutes to the playground.

In the span of 20 minutes on a lunch hour on Oct. 14, I witnessed 51 vehicles enter the intersection – only 28 stopped at the new signs on Howard Street. Sadly, the worst infraction was a fuel truck that failed to stop.

I live but one block away – I’ll hear the collision of the vehicles involved when a driver doesn’t even slow down for the stop signs and hits a crossing vehicle at Juniper Street. I pray there are no incidents with a child.
