A convicted child rapist from Maine who disappeared while on probation awaited extradition proceedings Monday after being taken into custody in Arizona.

U.S. marshals in Maine heard that Eugene Trundy might be in a trailer park in Arizona and alerted authorities in Phoenix. Trundy was picked up over the weekend in Apache Junction, Ariz., where people knew him as “Bob,” officials said.

Trundy, who used to live in Bangor, was convicted of gross sexual assault, gross sexual misconduct and unlawful sexual contact in 1992 for a series of assaults against children in Kennebec County.

He was being held at the Maricopa County Jail, where police were checking to see if there were any additional warrants against him. If not, then Trundy will then face extradition to Maine, officials said.
