YORK – State police detectives worked Monday to identify a body found over the weekend near the Maine Turnpike.

A motorist who stopped alongside the toll highway Saturday afternoon spotted the man’s body a short distance into the woods.

“The person looks to be an Asian male,” said Maine State Police Sgt. Walter Grzyb. “He had been there for several weeks, possibly.”

The death was being treated as suspicious. An autopsy was performed Sunday, but investigators declined to discuss the results.

If the motorist hadn’t stopped, the body likely would have remained in the woods through the winter, Grzyb said.
