Washington County has lost its greatest citizen, Fred Reynolds, president emeritus of the University of Maine at Machias.

He served the university as professor, coach, dean of students, academic dean and president for more than 40 years. He personally touched the lives of scores of students and members of the community.

As president of Washington County Technical College, I benefited from his sound counsel, advice and support. Because of his leadership, the university provides services today in the Calais area through the Unobskey School.

I thank him from the bottom of my heart for his service to the university, the county, the state, and most importantly, to his students.

Ron Renaud

President emeritus

Washington County Community College
