Dance studio to host hospital benefit in Belfast

Hello, Belfast.

It’s your turn to meet the volunteer dancers of Back Door Dance Studio in Eddington, who travel throughout the state donating their time and talent to help nonprofit organizations raise needed funds.

Their Zoot Suit Revue, under the direction of BDDS owners Chuck and Sue McKay, takes the stage at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at Belfast Area High School, 98 Waldo Ave.

Admission is by donation to watch this energetic troupe of dancers of all ages perform routines that include swing music and other period styles, complete with costumes appropriate to the specific dance era.

Doors open at 6 p.m., and refreshments will be available for this fun event that benefits operating room renovations for Waldo County General Hospital, which has been serving that area since 1901.

To inquire whether BDDS could help with your fundraising efforts, write the McKays, 34 Lois Lane, Eddington, 04428; call 843-5638 or e-mail Swingtime34@aol.com.

Tom Hancock reports “a broad range of community service organizations will have representatives” at the Volunteer Fair-Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, 134 State St., Ellsworth.

This event offers individuals who are seeking ways to contribute to their community an opportunity to learn which organizations need their help and what type of help is required.

Everyone is welcome, Hancock wrote.

Refreshments will be served, and you will learn which volunteer service opportunities might fit into your schedule, even if you “can offer only a few hours” of your time.

Among the organizations participating will be the American Red Cross, Downeast Health Services, Faith in Action-Community Connection, Hospice of Hancock County, Next Step Domestic Violence Project and Safe Family Exchange.

Hancock wrote the church will “also operate a Volunteer Clearinghouse, to help people connect with volunteer service opportunities.”

That information will be regularly updated, so you will have a continuing opportunity to learn how to help your neighbors.

The PWC ATV Club of Atkinson is hosting a benefit buffet dinner for the family of Harley and Betty Jo Cuthbertson at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Dover-Foxcroft Fair Grounds Dining Hall.

Admission is by donation and, if you wish, you may bring a dish to contribute to the meal.

The benefit also features a dance, a 50-50 raffle and a live auction.

The family is going through a difficult time as Harley Cuthbertson has been out of work for more than a year and is facing a third abdominal surgery at Children’s Hospital in Boston.

In addition, one of their children is in remission after treatment for cancer.

If you are unable to attend but would still like to help the family, you may contact Sandra Davis, 234 South Stage Coach Road, Atkinson, 04426 or call her at 564-8279.

Norma Binan of the Bangor Area Sewing Guild reports that organization is hosting a “Sew-in” from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Hampden Municipal Building on Western Avenue, to assist young victims of the recent Gulf Coast hurricanes.

“We invite the public to join us in sewing book bags for children,” Binan wrote. “Bring a machine, a snack and any fabrics you might have that are suitable for bags. Remember, kids are rough and tough, so bring sturdy fabrics.”

The group believes “this is an important thing to do,” she explained.

“Another organization will be filling the bags and sending them on.”

Are you raising a relative’s child?

If so, you might want to learn about school law by asking a lawyer questions.

You can do that free of charge, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, on the third floor of the Bangor Public Library.

This seminar about children’s rights in education and what you need to know about the law, schools and advocating for children, features Sara Meerse of KIDS Legal Aid of Maine.

She will discuss issues relating to special education, truancy, residency and school discipline.

However, to attend, you must contact Noreen Peters by Monday, Oct. 31.

You can e-mail her at npeters@familiesandchildren.org or call her, toll-free, at (866) 298-0896.

The seminar is sponsored by Family Connections, a program of Families and Children Together of Bangor.

Child care will be available at F.A.C.T. for registered children.
