PORTLAND – A 20-year-old Portland man has been sentenced in U.S. District Court to more than eight years in prison for his role in invading a Buxton farmhouse to steal marijuana.
Virgil Buzzell Jr., who was sentenced Wednesday, had pleaded guilty in June to charges of conspiring to possess and sell marijuana and possessing a gun in furtherance of a drug crime.
Prosecutors said Buzzell was with two other young men and two juveniles from the Portland area who forced their way into Kristifer Hutchins’ home last May. The intruders were armed with guns and intended to steal marijuana.
The four others, as well as Hutchins, have admitted to federal drug and gun crimes.
During a struggle, a sawed-off shotgun carried by Joshua Seavey, 18, discharged, striking Hutchins in the leg. Buzzell fired a .45-caliber handgun at Hutchins, hitting him in the thigh.
The other adult involved in the case, Daniel Gilligan, 20, was sentenced earlier in the week to seven years. Seavey and Hutchins have yet to be sentenced.
About a pound of marijuana was found in the house, the prosecution said.
