Brewer city staff are working on an “Adopt a Park” program so area groups, school classes or organizations can help maintain the garden plots within the nearly complete children’s garden along the Penobscot River. A public meeting to get the word out about the adoption program is set for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Brewer Auditorium. “We now have five groups, both civic and private, and six individuals signed up to assist,” Ken Hanscom, Brewer Parks and Recreation Department director, said Wednesday. “At that meeting we will be sharing the mission of the project along with goals and committee assignments as well as a work plan for the garden.” Plans are to plant five types of gardens in the three-quarters acre children’s garden, which could include a secret garden, a wetland garden, an heirloom garden, a woodland garden and an education garden that would be planted with herbs and native Maine plants. A waterfall, rock garden, walking bridge and performing area are in place, and a hedge maze has been planted but will need years of growth before it fills in.
