BANGOR – Scary scales, sinister skulls, chilling claws, bloodcurdling beaks and bones – these are some of the things you will encounter at the Maine Discovery Museum, Oct. 28-30. Creatures and artifacts at the museum will make your skin crawl. They will play a ghoulish role at the Halloween Exhibition of Sinister Natural History. It will be a jumble of creepy-crawly yet fascinating specimens of the natural world.
The fun begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, when guided tours will be given regularly. The exhibit tour is free with museum admission.
The fun and scares continue on Oct. 28 with a special version of “Parents’ Night Out.” Bring the kids to the museum for a spooky Halloween party, and parents get a night out on the town. Kids are encouraged to attend the party dressed in costume. There will be fun for everyone, including face painting and making crazy concoctions with Kool-Aid and dry ice.
Participants also will make a crunchy Halloween treat – yummy mummy fingers – pretzel rods covered with white chocolate.
And speaking of crazy concoctions, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, join us for the Bug Cuisine Workshop. This will be an introduction to edible insects – yes, edible. Learn about bugs and cultures that use them in cooking. Participants will be involved in the prep work and cooking.
Yes, you’ll really eat what is cooked. It will be a delectable combo of science and goose bumps – safe and hygienic. But don’t worry – you don’t have to eat the concoctions, but you can take them home to gross out your parents or siblings.
Dishes will be yummy and kid-friendly, including caramel- covered air-popped wax worms, mealworm stir-fry and crunchy cricket dip with cheese and crackers.
