High school bowling

BANGOR – High School Bowling USA is a nationwide effort to bring 10-pin bowling to high schools. As part of that effort, Family Fun Bowling Center in Bangor has opened its doors to area high schools. Costs related to practice and match games will be funded by the various lanes. There is no cost to students who participate. However, the bowling center does not provide transportation to and from the lanes.

The bowling center will provide generic equipment for those who do not have their own. The school is not required to supply equipment.

The Penobscot Area Bowling Conference will start its third season in November. Any high school student may participate in the program. To obtain more information, call Andy Meucci at 942-6701, or Ed Cotter, 884-6205.

Lights on Afterschool

BANGOR – The Bangor Y Brewer Neighborhood Club hosted an open house Monday to recognize the nationwide Lights On Afterschool program in the Epic Sports Climbing Gym at the Y on Hammond Street.

As a part of the effort, J.B. Klecha, manager of the Bangor Mall J.C. Penney store, presented a check for $5,000 to the Brewer Neighborhood Club.

YMCA of the USA and the J.C. Penney Afterschool Fund are helping get children off the streets and into safe, productive and rewarding environments after the school day ends. Thanks to grants from the J.C. Penney Afterschool Fund, YMCAs nationwide are able to offer more children a fun, supervised place to play, where they also may learn new activities and receive guidance with schoolwork.

The J.C. Penney fund recently awarded individual grants of $5,000 each to YMCAs in 255 local communities around the country, including the Bangor Y Brewer Neighborhood Club.

The Bangor Y Brewer Neighborhood Club provides Brewer at-risk children in grades three through five a place to build relationships, gain self-esteem, develop values and get assistance with homework. In addition, the group visits the Bangor Y twice a week after school to use the Bangor Y Epic Sports Climbing Gym and indoor swimming pools.

For more information, call Nancy Cambridge, Bangor Y youth and family director, or Carrie Anderson, director of development and communications, at 941-2808.
