PRESQUE ISLE – While the state referendum questions are taking center stage during the Nov. 8 election, voters at the local level also will choose candidates for City Council and the school board.
Three candidates are competing for two open seats on the Presque Isle City Council. Incumbent Ronald E. McPherson is running unopposed for a four-year term to the council. Seeking a one-year term are Edwin E. Nickerson and Robert G. Poiesz.
Poiesz’s father, the late Robert Poiesz, was serving the third year of his four-year term on the City Council when he passed away this fall.
On the school side, there are five three-year seats opening on the SAD 1 board but only two incumbents are seeking the positions.
Robert J. Cawley is running unopposed for the Section 5 seat on the board; Lori G. Kenneson is running unopposed for the Section 9 seat.
There are no candidates running for open seats in Section 4 and Section 14. Andy Yaeger is not seeking re-election to the Section 4 seat; Steve Hayes is not seeking re-election to Section 14.
Because SAD 1 covers the communities of Castle Hill, Chapman, Mapleton and Westfield along with Presque Isle, voters in some of the outlying communities will be deciding on open seats.
In Section 2, which comprises all of Castle Hill and a portion of Mapleton, Torry Eaton is running unopposed for the three-year seat.
In Section 4, which comprises all of Westfield and part of Presque Isle, Westfield voters will help determine a replacement for Yaeger.
Polls will be open in Presque Isle from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the William V. Haskell Community Center on Main Street.
In Westfield, polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Westfield Town Office on Main Street.
In Castle Hill, polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Castle Hill Grange Hall on State Road.
In Mapleton, polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mapleton Elementary School on Main Street.
