ST. GEORGE – The proposed Lillius Gilchrest Grace Youth Center won unanimous approval from the planning board earlier this week, according to Code Enforcement Officer Ralph Eugley on Friday.
The board is scheduled to meet Tuesday, Nov. 8, to complete findings of fact, Eugley said, noting the project then could be issued a building permit as early as the next day.
The $800,000 youth center, which will offer a counseling center and after-school activities, will include two second-floor apartments for staff. The 6,900-square-foot facility will be situated on land adjacent to St. George School, along “the Marsh.”
The Lillius Gilchrest Grace Institute was created about 60 years ago to foster domestic science education for women and industrial arts programs for men in the town of St. George. Namesake Lillius Gilchrest Grace, who was born in St. George, married W.R. Grace, a New York City mayor and prominent businessman.
Christian H. Fasoldt Architects of Rockport has designed the two-story building, which will be built by Monroe & Goodwin of Camden.
According to Eugley, Grace representatives did not indicate when construction might begin. They also have not said what will be done with the institute’s existing buildings, located across the street on Route 131.
