Breton OT goal gives Lakers title Greenville to play Lee in state game

GREENVILLE – Hannah Breton scored on a Martha Richardson assist five minutes into overtime Saturday, lifting top-seeded Greenville to a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Richmond in the Western Maine Class D girls soccer championship game.

The Lakers (15-1) take on Eastern Maine titlist Lee Academy (17-0) in Saturday’s state championship game. The site has not yet been determined.

Breton scored the first goal of the game 16 minutes in the second half for Greenville. Beth Bartley made seven saves on eight shots.

Shelby Hurley scored with 10 minutes left in regulation on a Stephanie O’Brien assist for 12-3-1 Richmond. Celia Carlton stopped seven of 11 shots.

Eastern Class C

Madawaska 2, GSA 1 (2OT)

At Madawaska, Jamie Nadeau scored an unassisted goal with nine minutes left in the second overtime to lead No. 1 Madawaska past No. 3 George Stevens Academy to claim the Class C Eastern Maine Championship.

The 15-2 Owls advance to Saturday’s state title contest against Western Maine winner North Yarmouth Academy (15-2) at a site to be determined.

Nadeau scored Madawaska’s first goal on an assist from Sarah Nadeau 11:25 into the second half. Liz Laplante made 19 saves on 23 shots for the winners.

Brandi Winters scored an unassisted goal 22:12 into the second half for 11-4-2 George Stevens of Blue Hill. Kayla Eaton stopped 14 of 21 shots.

Class B

Winslow 1, John Bapst 0

At Winslow, Chelsea Carrier’s goal at the 30:36 mark of the second half lifted the No. 1 Black Raiders by the No. 3 Crusaders of Bangor for the Eastern Maine Class B title.

Carrier also scored the game-winning goal for Winslow last year in its EM title win over Presque Isle.

Winslow (16-0-1) will battle Western Maine champ Falmouth (14-1-2) for the state title Saturday at a site to be determined.

Carrier’s winning goal against the Crusaders was her third straight attempt after the first two shots were blocked. Hannah Brazier made seven saves for the Raiders.

John Bapst outshot Winslow 20-10, but couldn’t convert. Caroline Cassling made three saves for 14-3 John Bapst.

WM Class D Boys Soccer

Richmond 4, Greenville 3 (PKs)

At Greenville, the top-seeded Lakers scored two goals in the final three minutes to force overtime, but it was the No. 2 Bobcats who emerged with a 3-1 advantage in penalty kicks after two scoreless overtimes while claiming the regional championship.

Jonah Lizotte had scored the tying goal for Greenville with 1:44 left in regulation, sending the contest into overtime.

Andy Harrington, Jason Brown and Nate Holden each tallied a goal in the second half for 13-3 Richmond. Kyle Lancaster made 18 saves on 40 shots.

Brandon Lavigne and Durgin McKusick each tallied a goal in the second half for the Lakers, who finished the season 14-2. Lavigne made 17 saves on 22 shots.

Football

Bangor 21, Oxford Hills 14

At Oxford Hills, Alex Gallant scored touchdowns on runs of 10 and 25 yards to help lead Bangor to a season-ending victory.

Ian Edwards completed a 17-yard pass to Tom Crews for the second Bangor touchdown as the Rams built a 21-0 first-half advantage.

Ethan Sutton caught a 39-yard pass from Ben Ryerson to score Oxford Hills’ first touchdown in the second quarter. Jim Bower added another touchdown on a four-yard rush.
