Leon, Williams lead Husson past Becker

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman running backs Ryan Leon and Julius Williams teamed up for 175 rushing yards and four touchdowns and Husson College amassed 525 yards of total offense on its way to a 43-7 Division III football victory over Becker on Sunday.

Junior quarterback David Chase completed 11 of 13 passes for 230 yards for the 2-3 Eagles.

Leon picked up 91 yards on 11 carries, including touchdown runs of 7 and 8 yards. Williams had 84 yards on 20 carries with scoring runs of 1 and 4 yards.

With Husson ahead 7-0, a 45-yard fumble return by Belfast’s Colby Horne made it 13-0. Becker’s Jeff Ruggiero had intercepted a pass and returned it 15 yards only to have Horne force the fumble and return it.

Becker (0-7) scored on a 44-yard pass from Shawn Cameron to Acie Johnson.

The Eagle defense limited Becker to 191 total yards. Shane Rogers was in on six tackles, while Scott, Rumeal Barton, Bryan Biggers and Joe Melcher each had an interception.

Tyrone Gamble paced Becker with 60 rushing yards.

Maine Maritime 21, Westfield 11

At Westfield, Mass., Don Thibodeau scored two touchdowns as Maine Maritime defeated Westfield State.

Maine Maritime took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a 42-yard pass from B.J. Dunlap to Brian Goodrich and never trailed.

Westfield lost a chance to tie the game with six minutes left in the second half, when MMA recovered Mike Lorenzano’s fumbled handoff at the three-yard line.

Westfield State held the Mariners to 211 total offensive yards, but committed nine turnovers. Thibodeau was held to 57 yards on 23 carries.

MMA’s Anthony Gervasio made three interceptions and returned a fumble 73 yards in addition to making 51/2 tackles. Chris Metcalf posted nine stops, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Westfield wide receiver B.J. Holleran set a school record with 14 catches.

Colby 24, Bates 17

At Waterville, Aaron Stepka rushed for 117 yards on 29 carries and scored a touchdown as Colby defeated Bates.

The Mules (5-1) led 21-7 at the half before Bates (1-5) cut the deficit to four on Adam Poplanski’s 3-yard touchdown reception from Brandon Colon and a 35-yard field goal by Tyler Schmelz.

Colby’s John Goss closed out the scoring with a 29-yard field goal with 1:26 remaining.

Justin Smith ran for one Colby TD and hit John Vacca with a 32-yard pass for another.

Colon passed for 245 yards for Bates.

Bowdoin 35, Wesleyan 10

At Brunswick, Ricky Leclerc threw a school-record five touchdowns as Bowdoin defeated Wesleyan to clinch its first winning season since 1998.

Jeff Nolin caught three of Leclerc’s scoring passes, including a 72-yard sideline strike in the final period. Scott Brisson and Jared Prichard caught the other two TD passes.

Wesleyan (0-6) took the lead on a field goal by Chris Helsel on the opening drive. Bowdoin (5-1) scored the next 21 points before the Cardinals’ only touchdown came on a 4-yard run by Phil Banks.
