Terriers upend Bears BU will host AE tourney

ORONO – First-half goals by Amy Seaman, Lincolnville’s Sarah Shute and Lauren Alfaro staked the Terriers to a 3-0 lead and they earned the right to host the America East championships next weekend by upending the University of Maine’s Black Bears 3-1 at Alfond Stadium Sunday.

BU, ranked 18th in the latest national poll, wound up sharing the conference regular season title with Maine but BU is seeded first based on its victory over the Bears.

Both finished 4-1 in the conference and for Maine it was the first time in the school’s 17-year history in the league that it finished first or tied for first.

Fourth seed Vermont and BU will meet in Friday’s noon semifinal in Cambridge, Mass. with Maine taking on No. 3 seed Albany at 2:30. The title game will be Saturday at 3 p.m.

Sarah Hudak, Pam Spuehler and Colleen McClay had assists for the 13-5 Terriers and Erin Prediger finished with five saves on eight shots.

Kasey Spencer of Old Town scored her eighth goal of the season for 12-6 Maine in the second half but the Bears, despite an 8-3 shots advantage in the second half, couldn’t pull any closer.

Rebecca Giroux made six first-half saves for Maine and Maygan Cassarino had three more in the second half.

UM-Farmington 2, Becker 0

At Farmington, Kristy Veazie scored an unassisted goal at 22:34 to push No. 3 University of Maine at Farmington to victory over No. 6 Becker College on Saturday in the North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinals.

Kristen Chambers added an insurance goal on a Katie Gorham assist at 29:01 for 10-5 UM-Farmington. Kaeleigh Barker stopped five of seven shots.

Michelle DeSantis made 12 saves on 24 shots for 7-9 Becker.

Castleton State 4, Husson 2

At Fair Haven, Vt., Carrie Black scored a pair of goals and assisted on the other two as fourth seed Castleton State eliminated fifth seed Husson College of Bangor.

Castleton State improved to 8-8 while Husson finished at 7-9.

Black set up Carolyn Griggs’ game-opening goal and made it 2-0 14:18 later.

KaroleAnne Emery got one back for Husson later in the first half but Jen Mason re-established the two-goal lead before the intermission.

Emery again pulled Husson within one early in the second half but Black answered off a Griggs assist.

Castleton State outshot the Eagles 18-11. Goalies Kelly Bocchino of Husson and Trisha Clark of Castleton State each finished with seven saves.

USM 2, Bridgewater State 0

At Gorham, Samantha Johnson knocked in her third goal of the season and what proved to be the game-winner just 1:40 into the second peroid.

Johnson scored the goal off a pass from midfielder Megan Stanley. The Huskies added an insurance goal late after Erica Brown finished off an assist from Alyssa Kraus.

Sadie Garnache-Poirier made five saves on six shots for 7-12 University of Southern Maine. Nicole Downs stopped eight of 16 shots for 5-12 Bridgewater State.

Bates 3, Colby 2

At Waterville, Rachel Greenwood scored with 11:14 left off an assist from Abby Childs to put Bates up for good.

Allison Marshall and Emily Sampson each scored a goal as Bates fought back a 2-0 lead in the second to tie it at two. Sarah Judice made seven saves on 20 shots for 7-7 Bates.

Colby’s Mary Clare Snediker scored two goals in the first to give them the early lead. Jamie Enos had six saves on 11 shots for the White Mules.
