BOSTON – Sophomore goalie Jasmine Phillips, the America East Goalkeeper of the Year, made three consecutive saves in the penalty kick shootout Sunday as the University of Maine advanced to its third straight league championship game by virtue of its 1-0 win over Binghamton at Nickerson Field.

Maine and Binghamton were tied 0-0 after two overtimes.

The second-seeded Bears, 11-5-2, face 12-4-4 Boston University in Saturday’s 1 p.m. league championship game in Boston.

Top seed BU advanced with a 2-1 overtime win over New Hampshire.

Maine’s Laura Harper and Binghamton’s Kelly Sanders each converted from the penalty spot to open the shootout and Marie-Andree Canuel gave Maine a 2-1 lead when she beat Binghamton goalie Kristie Bowers.

Phillips stopped Vicky Vernicek’s attempt and, after Bowers made a save on Maine’s Marie-Michele Bouchard, Phillips rejected Tricia Reed’s bid.

Saco’s Natalie Berry made it 3-1 and, when Phillips stopped Meghan Taylor’s kick, the Bears had avenged last year’s 2-0 AE title game loss to Binghamton.

Binghamton, which finished 10-6-4, also dealt Maine its only league loss this season.

Phillips made four saves on 11 shots prior to the shootout and Bowers stopped nine of the 25 shots attempted by the Bears.

North Atlantic Conference

Maine Maritime 2, Husson 1

At Castine, Jessica Taylor scored on an Amy Preble assist at 87 minutes to lead No. 4 Maine Maritime Academy to victory over No. 5 Husson College in the NAC Quarterfinals on Saturday.

Amy Asselin scored at 7:05 on a Taylor assist for 10-6-1 MMA. Meghan Marshall made three saves on four shots.

Kaylin Caron scored on a Deidra Ham assist at 78:30 for 8-8-3 Husson College of Bangor. Leah Drew stopped nine of 11 shots.

UM-Farmington 2, Thomas 0

At Farmington, Melissa Porter scored at 57:41 on a Jodie Welch corner kick to lead No. 2 University of Maine-Farmington past No. 7 Thomas College in the North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal on Saturday.

Erin Campbell also scored off a Welch corner kick at 71:37 for 10-1-2 UM-Farmington. Melissa Demerchant stopped the only shot she saw.

Shannon Proctor made four saves on six shots for 6-6 Thomas College of Waterville.

Western Connecticut 1, USM 0

At Gorham, junior midfielder Jessica Gomes scored the only goal in the eighth minute of play to give Western Connecticut State the win.

Senior forward Nicole Corbin set up the goal with a pass through USM defenders to Gomes. Ashley Griffin made three saves on seven shots for 13-1-2 Western Connecticut.

Mindy Morneault had 13 saves on 20 shots for 10-6-1 University of Southern Maine.

Saint Joseph’s 13, Mitchell 0

At Standish, Danielle McLaughlin and Karla Emerson both scored two goals and had an assist Sunday to push Saint Joseph’s College to the win.

Heather Stanger, Katie Jordan, and Lindsay King each added two goals for the 10-6 Monks. Megan Willette had a goal and an assist while Catie Cargill and Kerri Driscoll both scored a goal. Krista Wotherspoon didn’t face a shot.

Katie Carlson made 25 saves on 50 shots for 6-8 Michell College of New London, Conn.

Saint Joseph’s 5, UMPI 0

At Standish, Megan Willettee scored two goals and recorded an assist Saturday to lead Saint Joseph’s by the University of Maine-Presque Isle.

Michelle Crisp and Heather Stanger had assists on Willette’s goals. Kerri Driscoll, Danni McLaughlin and Lindsey King each added a goal.

Krista Wotherspoon made three saves on three shots for the 9-6 Monks while Johanna Bubar stopped 18 of 33 shots for 7-6-1 UMPI.

Colby 2, Bates 2 (OT)

At Waterville, Becky Macdonald scored on a long shot with 58 seconds left in regulation Saturday to tie the game for Bates.

Meg Coffin scored an unassisted goal at 7:34 of the second half to tie the game 1-1. Nini Spalding made eight saves on 10 shots for the 10-3-1 Bobcats of Lewiston.

Kara McCabe and Libba Cox scored for Colby while Liza Benson had 12 saves on 14 shots for 7-2-4 the White Mules.

NESCAC

Colby 1, Amherst 0 (2OT, PK)

At Amherst, Mass., Meggie Herlihy, Libba Cox, Mollie Puskar and Katie McCabe each converted a penalty kick Sunday to help lead No. 7 Colby College of Waterville to the upset of No. 2 Amherst College in the NESCAC quarterfinals.

Liza Benson made four saves in 110 minutes for 7-2-5 Colby and also made two saves on overtime penalty kicks.

Piper Crowell had four saves on five shots for Amherst.

Men’s Cross Country

Davis wins AE individual title

At Vestal, N.Y., on Saturday, Kirby Davis covered the 8-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 38 seconds, winning the men’s individual title at the America East cross country championships.

Davis, a junior from Falmouth, crossed the finish line 21 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher while becoming the first Black Bear to earn individual honors.

UMaine placed third in the team competition behind winner Maryland Baltimore County and runner-up New Hampshire.

Men’s Soccer

Stony Brook 3, Maine 2 (OT)

At Orono, Douglas Harvaez scored on a Michael Palacio assist at 94:06 in overtime to push Stony Brook past the University of Maine in America East play on Sunday.

Rob Fucci scored two goals to bring 10-4-3 Stony Brook back from a 2-0 deficit. John Moschella stopped three of five shots.

Adam Chenault scored both goals for the 2-10-2 Black Bears. Kevin Forgett had an assist on the first goal. Chad Mongeon and Ben Piotzowski combined to make seven saves on 10 shots.

Bates 3, Colby 2 (OT)

At Waterville, David Shear scored in the 96th minute Saturday to lead Bates College of Lewiston to the overtime win over Colby.

Shear also scored in the 82nd minute for 9-3-2 Bates and Ithai Schori added a goal in the 84th minute. Aaron Schleicher made five saves on 18 shots.

Chris MacFadyen scored on a Monty Hankin assist in the 55th minute for 7-7 Colby and Bobby Abendroth scored a minute later on a Logan King assist. Josh Kahane made seven saves on 13 shots.

Sunrise Conference

Lyndon St. 1, UMM 0 (2OT, PK)

At Lyndonville, Vt., Lyndon State College prevailed in overtime penalty kicks 3-2 to claim the Sunrise Conference semifinal win over the University of Maine-Machias on Sunday.

Jeff Giroux made eight saves on 22 shots for Lyndon State.

Zach Sheller had four saves on 19 shots for UM-Machias.

UMF 0, Johnson St. 0 (2OT)

At Johnson, Vt., Brian Lemont made six saves on 15 shots in 109 minutes of play Sunday as the University of Maine-Farmington (4-8-4) played to a tie with Johnson State.

Andrew Lane stopped five of 11 shots for 8-6-4 Johnson State.

Western Connecticut 1, USM 0

At Danbury, Conn., Matt Cusack closed out his Western Connecticut career by scoring the winning goal in the 74th minute of play.

Daniel Michalowski recorded his eighth shutout of the season after making three saves on seven shots for the 12-4-2 winners.

Chris Willard made eight stops on 26 shots for the 5-10-3 Southern Maine of Gorham.

Volleyball

Maine 3, New Hampshire 0

At Durham, N.H., Shelly Seipp had 42 set assists and 11 digs Sunday to lead the University of Maine past the University of New Hampshire 30-17, 33-31, 30-28 in America East action.

Leah Guidinger had 15 kills and eight digs for the 8-11 Black Bears. Shannan Fotter had 13 kills and Lindsay Allman added 10 digs.

Lucia Bridova had 33 set assists and nine digs for 6-18 New Hampshire. Sarah Rehn had 11 digs and Erin Walker had 11 kills.

Women’s Hockey

Maine 8, Sacred Heart 1

At Orono, Cheryl White scored two goals and assisted another Saturday to lead the University of Maine to the win.

Brigitte Laflamme, Sonia Corriveau and Vanessa Vani each had a goal and an assist for the 5-2-1 Black Bears. Danielle Tangredi and Karine Senecal both added a goal and an assist and Kim MacElhaney had a goal. Rachel Gettings made five saves on six shots.

Michelle Panella scored in the third period for 0-4-1 Sacred Heart. Stephanie Boulay and Sarah Perry combined to stop 35 of 43 shots.
