Last weekend I told you about the 200th anniversary of the Dennysville-Edmunds Congregational Church, which Mary McFadden wrote, “is one of the oldest continuing churches in eastern Maine.”
Its congregation is in the process of building a new parish hall, for which “countless volunteer hours of labor have been donated by people from the congregation and from the communities served by the church,” McFadden wrote.
“The two-story structure, with lots of windows facing the Dennys River, has recently received siding and shingles, so it is watertight for the coming cold weather.”
Inside work, such as insulation, wiring and flooring, will resume when the weather improves, “and after the fundraising committee has held activities to bring in more financial help,” she continued.
Mary is the chairwoman and her husband, Roy McFadden, is the finance officer of the Parish Hall Fundraising Committee.
One of the committee’s “mainstay activities,” she wrote, is a monthly breakfast 7-9:30 a.m. the first Saturday of every month at the EDM Youth Center in Dennysville.
That means the next meal is Saturday, Nov. 5, at that site.
Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for children and $10 per family for pancakes, eggs, home fries, baked beans, sausage, bacon, toast, juice, coffee, tea and hot chocolate.
“We regularly serve around 80 people and have had months in which the number has reached 100,” McFadden wrote.
“Our people look forward to a time of camaraderie and fellowship in addition to delicious food.”
So, remember, you have a place to go for a great breakfast at a bargain price the first Saturday of every month, and an opportunity to help maintain the facilities of this historic church.
Maestro Xiao-Lu Li is scheduled to visit with pupils of Conners-Emerson School in Bar Harbor today working with second-graders and members of the school orchestras.
The maestro’s visit is part of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra “Know Your Orchestra!” program in which BSO musicians offer demonstrations, an “instrument petting zoo” and master classes to youngsters in area schools.
For more information about “Know Your Orchestra!” call the BSO at (800) 639-3221 or 942-5555 or visit www.bangorsymphony.com.
I had to make three copies of Mary McFadden’s October e-mail, since she included information about three separate events. Here’s the third.
The Dennys River Volunteer Ambulance is hosting a harvest supper at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at Pembroke Elementary School.
McFadden wrote the menu will include baked beans, hot dogs, casseroles, salads, rolls and pies.
Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for children and $15 for families.
“This is one of the major fundraisers for the DRVA which, as the name suggests, is a completely volunteer organization serving the greater Dennysville-Pembroke area,” McFadden wrote.
“We are a tiny community but have a huge amount of volunteerism and pride.”
Andrew Murphy, owner of Heaten Oil Co., of Glenburn, is hosting a live benefit auction to raise funds to help qualified individuals with their home heating expenses through the nonprofit Mainers Helping Mainers organization.
Heaten Oil is asking for donations of cash, cars, motorcycles, four-wheelers and any other items you would care to contribute for the live auction which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at Heaten Oil Co., 379 Hudson Road in Glenburn.
Your donations can be dropped off at the business or, if you call during regular business hours by Friday, Nov. 4, arrangements can be made to pick them up.
For more information call Heaten Oil at 990-1773.
Cynthia Carter mailed me recently that the Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary’s craft fair is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, in the gymnasium at Charlotte Elementary School on Route 214.
Carter reports you will find quilts, ornaments, fleece hats, scarves, mittens, pillows, raffles and a great deal more at the fundraiser, as well as being able to buy lunch and take home goodies from the Bake Sale.
And, of course, the proceeds will help your good neighbors keep your community safe.
In last Friday’s column I had the incorrect telephone number for Theodore Robinson of Exeter, president of Burton-Goode-Sargent Chapter of the Korean War Veterans.
Korean veterans who want more information about attending the dedication ceremony of the Korean War plaque at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, in the Hall of Flags in the state Capitol building in Augusta, should call Robinson at 379-4481.
