I am lesbian. What do you fear?
I teach your children at Summer Festival of the Arts (SFOA). I’ve taught dozens of kids (and a few adults) how to ride their first bicycle. I volunteer at the Abbe Museum, Friends of Acadia, College of the Atlantic, Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) and Down East AIDS Network.
I’ve worked the front desk at the YMCA. I rake leaves in Acadia National Park in the fall, and pick up trash along Route 3 in the spring. I’ve attended births, funerals and laid an elderly friend to rest. I’ve been a bridesmaid three times, and never a bride. (And I have no desire to be, thank you.) I’ve shared a life and a home for many years.
My brother sends his daughters to stay with us for a month each summer. I’ve attended your kids’ recitals, performances, plays and graduations. I’ve shopped in your store; attended your church; signed your petitions; bought raffle tickets for your library fund-raiser; volunteered as a delegate at the Maine State Convention; cooked your meals when you were sick or depressed; visited you in the hospital; helped move your boat; shuttle your car; and stack your wood.
I’ve played softball with your sister, daughter, aunt and mom. I’ve worked with your brother, uncle, dad and son. I’ve listened and encouraged your teenage son who was hitchhiking home after dark in the snow. I’ve watched your house, your dog, your child.
I am an involved member of our island community. I love my community. What do you fear or hate about my lesbian love? I would like the same rights as everyone else. Please vote no on 1 on Nov. 8.
