Bangor’s Socoby injures knee Hoop season status unknown

Mark Socoby’s status for the high school basketball season is unknown as the Bangor High senior star suffered a knee injury Tuesday during a preseason game at the Bangor YMCA.

Bangor High coach Roger Reed said the Division I prospect suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee and was to go for a magnetic resonance imaging exam Friday afternoon.

“It’s a big loss for us and it’s a big loss for the whole state, basketball-wise,” Reed said Friday night. “He’s a big attraction for people who wanted to come out and see him play. He’s a great kid and a great basketball player.”

Socoby could not be reached for comment.

Reed said he believed Socoby injured his left knee. He was playing in a Pepsi Preseason High School League game when the 6-foot-5 forward made a cut and his knee gave out on him.

“Nobody hit him,” Reed said. “It was just one of those things.”

Reed doesn’t know Socoby’s prognosis, but the coach said Socoby will see another doctor on Tuesday.

A first-team All-Maine player in his sophomore and junior seasons, Socoby led Houlton to the Class C state championship in 2004 before transferring to Bangor for his junior year when his family moved to the Bangor area. He was the Big East Conference Class A Player of the Year and helped lead the Rams to a 17-1 regular-season record.

He averaged 13.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and three steals per game last year. Socoby racked up 24 points and nine rebounds in Bangor’s Eastern Maine quarterfinal loss to eventual state champion Hampden.

Socoby was the EM Class C tourney MVP in 2004 and was an honorable mention after the EM Class A tourney last winter.

Socoby had gained the attention of several Division I programs and had received letters from programs such as Florida State, St. Joseph’s (Pa.), and the University of Maine.

His sister, former Houlton standout Hannah Socoby, is married to University of Maine senior point guard Kevin Reed.
