BOSTON – Susan Marschall scored off a Meghann Cook corner kick 1:05 into the second overtime as the Boston University Terriers beat the University of Maine’s Black Bears 2-1 in the America East championship game at Nickerson Field Saturday.
Top seed Boston University improved to 13-4-4 and will now play in the NCAA Tournament.
It was the Terriers fourth AE championship in six years.
BU beat Maine in penalty kicks in the AE final two years ago and Maine lost to Binghamton 2-0 in last year’s title game.
Erica Lee put Boston on the board 11 minutes into the game by converting a Lauren Erwin assist.
Senior striker and school career scoring leader Heather Hathorn forced the overtime by notching her 35th career goal with 10:56 left in regulation.
Stephanie Dreyer and Christina Reuter combined to make four saves on 15 shots for the Terriers.
Jasmine Phillips saved three of 16 BU shots for the 11-6-2 Black Bears.
Maine’s Phillips, Marie Andree-Canuel and Linda Consolante were included on the All-Tournament team.
Marschall was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer.
Saint Joseph’s claims crown
At Standish on Sunday, Megan Willette notched two first-half goals to help lead the Monks to the Div. III Independents Northeast Championship by virtue of a 4-0 win over Green Mountain College (Vt.).
Saint Joseph’s blanked Russell Sage (N.Y.) in Saturday’s semifinal 2-0.
Katie Jordan scored her 12th goal of the season on a penalty kick, while Danielle McLaughlin scored the team’s last goal on a Willette assist.
Junior keeper Krista Wotherspoon recorded her sixth shutout of the season, saving four shots for 12-6 St. Joseph’s College.
Claire Davis made seven saves on 15 shots for Green Mountain, who wraps up its season at 12-5.
All-Tournament selections went to Katie Jordan (MVP), Megan Willette and Kerri Driscoll.
On Saturday, the Monks struck early as Driscoll delivered a pass to freshman Heather Stranger for the game-winner just eight minutes into the match.
Willette scored her 23rd goal of the season off a difficult angle at the 70:00 mark for St. Joseph’s. Krista Wotherspoon made two saves on four shots for the 11-6 Monks.
Schuyler Kokernak stopped three of 10 shots for 7-4-6 Russell Sage.
Castleton State 2, UMF 1
At Castleton, VT, the Crusaders jumped to a 2-0 lead through the first 32 minutes as Courtney Wilday headed in the ball off a corner kick from Stefanie Reuter.
The second goal for Castleton State came as Casey FitzGerald shot one in unassisted at 32:17. Kim Allen made seven saves on 17 shots for the 15-4-2 winners.
University of Maine-Farmington’s Olivia Irons converted a penalty kick at the 32:43 mark while Melissa Demerchant had eight saves on 15 shots for the 12-5-3 Beavers.
