BATH – Micah Abrams slammed home the decisive penalty kick in the second round of PKs as the Scarborough Red Storm beat the Mount Ararat Eagles for the Class A state boys soccer title 1-0 Saturday.

It was the first state title for Scarborough since a string of four straight from 1973-76. The Red Storm avenged a 1-0 loss to Mount Ararat in 2003. That game was also decided by penalty kicks.

Scarborough and Mount Ararat were scoreless two 40-minute halves in regulation and four 10-minute periods of overtime. The teams tied 3-3 in the first round of penalty kicks.

That sent the game to another best-of-five round. Scarborough goalie Derek Poulin’s penalty kick was saved by Mount Ararat goalie Ryan Vermette, but the Red Storm got three straight penalty kicks from Eddie Jones, Mike Keenan and Drew Kirstein before Poulin saved a shot by Mount Ararat’s C.J. Dirago to give Scarborough a 3-2 lead. Abrams’ kick sealed the win for the Red Storm.

Scarborough finishes at 16-1-1 while the Eagles wrap up at 17-1.
