CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sarah Shute of Lincolnville netted two goals to help the Boston University Terriers defeat the Maine Black Bears 3-1 for the America East field hockey championship Saturday.
Ashley Parker added an unassisted goal to open up the second half for the Terriers, who improve to 15-5 and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
The Black Bear score came from Nicole Emery off a Joanna Fernandes assist. Goalie Rebecca Giroux saved seven of 17 shots for Maine, who finishes 13-7.
Erin Prediger stopped one of two Black Bear shots for BU.
W. New England 2, UMF 1
At Springfield, Mass., on Saturday, Allison Jameson scored the game-winning goal with eight seconds to go in the game to edge UMaine-Farmington and capture the NAC championship.
Cori Eggert scored the first Golden Bear goal off a Jameson assist for 19-4 WNEC.
Kristi Cochin tied the game for the Beavers with two minutes left in regulation. Kaeleigh Barker made 13 saves for UMF, who finished the season at 11-6.
Jillian Brown stopped eight shots for the champs.
Men’s soccer
UMPI loses in final
The UM-Presque Isle men’s soccer team lost Sunday to Newbury College in the Div. III Independents Northeast Championship, after advancing to the game by defeating Lincoln University in the semifinal.
In Saturday’s game, Owls keeper Scott Clenchy saved seven of Lincoln’s 15 shots to earn the shutout and advance UMPI to the finals.
Travis Parent and Chase Higgins scored the goals for 7-7-1 Presque Isle, while Robert Allan picked up an assist.
Keeper Kyle Wanamaker stopped eight of 14 shots for Lincoln, who the finished the season at 6-7-1.
In Sunday’s game, Evan Hudson and Ari Kazin came up with the Newbury goals to help capture the title.
Andy Hutierrez stopped four of 14 shots to gain the shutout for Newbury, who improves to 8-8.
Matt Petrie made five saves on 19 shots for the Owls, who wrap up its season at 7-8-1.
Lyndon State 2, UMFK 1
At Fort Kent, Rob Carey converted off an indirect kick from Michael Thatcher in the 58th minute to score what proved to be the winning goal for the Hornets.
Rodney Mercier scored the first goal for Lyndon State on an assist from John Schwardtle in the 32nd minute. Jeff Giroux made 18 saves on 30 shots for Lyndon State.
University of Maine-Fort Kent tied the score on a breakaway goal by Rob Rochester, with an assist from Andy Martin in the 42nd minute. Nicholas Thibodeau stopped eight of 11 shots for the Bengals.
Volleyball
Maine defeats Binghamton
At Orono Saturday, the Maine volleyball team defeated Binghamton 30-24, 23-30, 30-22, and 30-26 to improve its record to 10-11.
Senior co-captain Kaili Jordan led the Black Bears with 20 kills and five blocks, while freshman Amy Lawson tallied 13 kills and a match-high six blocks. Leah Guidinger added 14 kills and Shannon Fotter registered nine kills and six service aces.
Katie Brody had 18 kills and 10 digs for the Bearcats, while Jaclyn Strader had 24 digs for 17-11 Binghamton.
The win is the fourth straight for Maine.
