Thibodeau powers MMA to 7th victory

CASTINE – Don Thibodeau gained 160 yards on 25 carries and scored two touchdowns to help Maine Maritime Academy end its regular season with a 35-6 football victory over Framingham State College Saturday.

The senior fullback from Shawmut leads the New England Football Conference in rushing with 1,691 yards on 276 carries.

The Mariners, who wind up 7-2, ran the ball 70 times for 333 yards.

MMA quarterback B.J. Dunlap of Skowhegan completed two of nine passes, but both went for touchdowns and totaled 81 yards. He also ran 10 times for 66 yards.

The Mariners helped force five turnovers by 2-7 Framingham and held the Rams to 75 yards rushing, although FSC quarterbacks Eian Bain (72) and Evan McCullough (151) combined for 223 passing yards.

Maine Maritime led 35-0 after setting up two scores defensively with an interception and a safety in the first quarter. The Mariners broke the game open in the second quarter with three touchdowns: A 26-yard TD pass from Dunlap to Jon Farrin (Boothbay Harbor) and two Thibodeau TD runs.

Husson 46, Becker 13

At Bangor, the Husson College Eagles exploded for 26 points in the first quarter and never looked back on the way to their second straight win over Becker College and third of the season, setting a new high for wins in a season and giving them a 3-3 record.

Husson’s previous best season was last year, when the Eagles went 2-5.

Junior quarterback David Chase of Sabattus completed seven of nine passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns while Ryan Leon carried the ball 17 times for 116 yards and another TD to lead the Eagles.

Husson racked up 414 total offensive yards and held the Hawks, who committed six turnovers, to 209.

Tyron Gamble led the Hawks with 96 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.

Colby 28, Tufts 16

At Waterville, Aaron Stepka ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns while Chris Bashaw added 119 yards more to lead the Colby White Mules past Tufts University.

Colby’s 6-1 record gives the football program its first back-to-back seasons with six wins or more since 1908-1909, when the Mules went 6-1 and 7-0, respectively.

Tufts had a 16-7 lead at halftime, but was shut out in the second half.

Colby quarterback Justin Smith completed 17 of 25 passes for two TD’s and 202 yards. Michael Tomich caught six passes for 131 yards and two TD’s.

The Mules had 470 total yards while the Jumbos finished with 300.

Tufts receiver David Halas had four receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

Bowdoin 21, Bates 14

At Lewiston, the Bowdoin College Polar Bears scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter as quarterback Ricky Leclerc passed for two touchdowns and 306 yards.

Matt Boyd’s 2-yard touchdown run with 58 seconds left in the game put the Polar Bears ahead for the first time.

Boyd had 32 carries for 124 yards and Jeff Nolin had nine receptions for 135 yards.

Jamie Walker led the Bobcats with 118 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries, but had to leave the game in the third quarter with an undisclosed injury. Brandon Colon threw 20 of 32 passes complete for 172 yards.
