BANGOR – A Bangor man was indicted Monday by the Penobscot County grand jury for severely injuring his infant son by shaking him.

Matthew L. Williams, 22, was indicted for aggravated assault.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 30 in Penobscot County Superior Court.

If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.

The baby, born on Aug. 18, has suffered permanent brain damage, Michael Roberts, deputy district attorney for Penobscot County, said Monday. He was taken on Sept. 30 by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

“It appears that there was more than one event that caused the injuries,” Roberts said.

The baby, who is in the custody of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, has been released from the hospital, according to the prosecutor. He can breathe on his own but has not regained consciousness. As a result of his injuries, the baby is blind and is not expected to regain any significant brain function, Roberts said.

The infant’s mother is not facing charges.

If the baby does not survive, his father could be charged with manslaughter.

In an unrelated case, the grand jury indicted John Oliveira, 20, of Bangor and Caitlin Maddan, 18, of Frankfort for beating and robbing a man, then leaving him in his underwear on the side of a road in Glenburn.

The two are scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 30 in Penobscot County Superior Court.

If convicted, the two face up to 30 years in prison on robbery charges and up to 10 years in prison on aggravated assault charges.

Maddan allegedly asked the 17-year-old male victim to take her to visit an aunt on the Clark Road in Glenburn, Greg Campbell, assistant district attorney for Penobscot County, said Monday. When Maddan asked the victim to stop so she could get something out of the trunk, Oliveira and others allegedly punched and kicked the victim, stripped him of his clothes and stole his watch and other jewelry.

Others indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury included:

Derreck S. Bard, 20, Guilford, aggravated assault.

Jeffrey A. Bell, 21, Hampden, theft by unauthorized taking.

Jeffrey Bouchard, 21, Silver Ridge Township, unlawful trafficking of scheduled drugs, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs.
