WASHINGTON – Judges would have the power to televise federal court proceedings under a bill approved Wednesday by the House. Senators considered doing the same, despite President Bush’s opposition.
The House, by a 375-45 vote, passed a courthouse security bill that included the broadcast provision. Democratic Rep. Tom Allen of Maine’s 1st District voted for the bill, while Democratic Rep. Michael Michaud of the 2nd District voted against it.
The legislation faces an uncertain future because of the White House’s concerns.
“While the administration understands the public interest in viewing trials, the administration believes [the policy] has the potential to influence court proceedings unduly and to compromise the security of participants in the judicial process,” the White House said in a statement.
