Senior League softball

HAMPDEN – The Hampden-Newburgh-Winterport Senior League Softball Team won the state title by defeating Biddeford this summer. The win earned the team the right to represent Maine in the Eastern Regionals in Maryland.

The Maine team started out with a 23-5 win over New Hampshire. Then they faced last year’s World Series semi-finalist, Pennsylvania.

The Maine team fought hard – they were behind by three runs when they scored three and sent the game into extra innings. After the 10th inning, the game was called because of darkness and resumed the next day. The team lost in the 11th inning. They played Rhode Island immediately after the loss to Pennsylvania and came up short.

The team’s final game was against Maryland – also a loss. But the team has racked up four state titles since the team was formed in 1999.

Team members were Kasey Belcher, Mikki Libbey, Kate Plowman, Michelle Wells, Anjelica Davenport, Lacey Littlefield, Eva Shannon, Nellie Wood, Ashley Gott, Amanda Palmer and Tara Utecht. Team coaches are Rodney Wells, Dave Plowman and Jeff Littlefield.

Paul Bunyan Marathon

BANGOR – The Paul Bunyan Marathon was last run through the streets of Bangor in 1984. The race will return to the Bangor area on July 16, 2006.

The marathon will start at 6 a.m. to beat afternoon temperatures and follow a newly revised course that will take runners on a journey through runner-friendly roads and along segments of original Bunyan routes.

Guest speakers for the event will include Dick Beardsley and Patti “Dillon” Lyons. Speakers will join runners at the Expo before the race at the pre-race pasta dinner. They will crown the overall male and female winners.

With the help from official footwear sponsor LOCO Sports Inc., the Paul Bunyan Marathon will give back to the community thousands of dollars of sporting goods to area recreation departments and running clubs.

Veteran Bunyan runners who would like to join the marathon may do so without an entry fee.

A shorter 10k event also will be held at 6 a.m. Children’s events will take place throughout the day.
