Missing man’s body found in Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER – Searchers on Friday morning recovered the body of a local man who has been missing since Tuesday, according to an official with the Maine Warden Service.

Gary Davis, 70, of Bridgewater was found dead near the Snow Settlement Road after a night and day of ground and air searches by several agencies and dozens of local volunteers, Sgt. Tom Ward said Friday.

Ward said it appears Davis’ pickup truck stopped working and when he attempted to walk through the woods and fields for help, he collapsed and died.

The warden said Davis had some health issues, although he declined to elaborate.

The Maine Warden Service began its search Thursday afternoon, when officials from the Maine State Police notified the service Davis was missing.

Ward said Davis lived by himself but was regular in his habits. He noted Davis was known to read his newspaper every morning. His paper from Tuesday was in the house, but his Wednesday and Thursday papers were outside.

Ward said one of Davis’ daughters “missed him” and asked state police to check on him.

When they discovered Davis’ truck was missing, they looked for it in the “few places” he liked to hunt. Police discovered the truck in a field on the Snow Settlement Road and called in the Warden Service.

Ward said that the truck appeared to have mechanical difficulties and that officials think Davis tried to walk back to the road.

Searchers worked Thursday evening, using all-terrain vehicles and state police dogs to check the fields and patches of woods between the truck and the road.

Officials also used an Army National Guard helicopter and thermal imaging equipment in the search, which they called off early Friday morning.

At daybreak Friday, several dozen searchers and a warden plane participated in the search.

Ward said a search team from the Bridgewater Fire Department located Davis’ body about three-tenths of a mile south of his truck near a tree.

Ward said that no foul play was suspected in Davis’ death but that the State Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet determined a cause of death.
