THETFORD, Vt. – Two Connecticut teams earned top honors Saturday at the 71st New England Interscholastic Cross Country Championships held at Thetford Academy.
Lyman (Conn.) Memorial High School girls team won the girls championship, scoring 119 points to defeat second-place Champlain Valley Union High of Vermont, which finished with 159. Lyman Memorial was led by junior Kelly Sorrell, who placed second overall, six seconds behind the winning time of 19 minutes, 32.5 seconds turned in by senior Amie Schumacher of Holy Cross (Conn.) High School.
Ashley Morgan of Deering of Portland had the top Maine time in the girls meet, completing the 5-kilometer course in 20:14.9. Molly Peverada, a junior from Hampden Academy, placed 14th overall in 20:23.4, while Abby Pullen of Maranacook of Readfield (16th) and Maddy Glover of John Bapst of Bangor (17th) also turned in top-20 finishes.
This marked the first time since 1973 that Maine has sent full teams to the New Englands. The top Maine team in the girls meet was Freeport, which finished 19th among the 30 competing teams. Cape Elizabeth finished 22nd, with Brunswick 23rd, Old Town 25th, Mount Desert Island 26th and York 27th.
Sophomore Hilary Maxim paced Old Town with a 25th-place finish, while Emily Farley finished 109th overall in the 265-runner field to lead MDI.
Amity (Conn.) High School edged Bishop Hendricken (R.I.) 134-147 to capture the boys championship, despite Bishop Hendricken senior Thomas Webb winning the individual title in 16:26.9.
Nick Williams of Poland High led the Maine finishers, placing eighth overall in 17:10.9 to edge ninth-place Tyler Clark of Lisbon (17:11.2).
Among Eastern Maine runners, Adam Deveau of Mt. Blue of Farmington finished 34th in 17:43.2, while Sam Sheehan of Caribou was 54th in 17:56.4 and Corey DeWitt of Ellsworth placed 65th in 18:05.
Falmouth was the top-finishing Maine team, placing ninth overall, while Cape Elizabeth was 11th and Portland 16th. Other Maine boys teams were Lisbon (20th), Scarborough (21st) and York (24th).
