UM-Fort Kent settles for split in tournament

FORT KENT – The University of Maine-Fort Kent men picked up a win and a loss in the Bengals Tip-Off Classic basketball tournament Saturday and Sunday.

The Bengals beat Mount Allison University of Sackville, New Brunswick 62-54 on Saturday and then were topped 74-57 by St. Thomas University of Fredericton, New Brunswick Sunday.

On Sunday, Adam Thornton scored 17 points and Dan Budd added 13 to lead St. Thomas past the Bengals.

Rytis Kriunas led UMFK with 19 points and Billy Russo contributed 14 points and 14 rebounds.

On Saturday, Kriunas led the Bengals with 17 points. Billy Russo and David Russo each scored 11 while Darius Parker added 10 points and four assists.

Robert MacQuarrie led Mount Allison with 12 while Allan Dunn and Tim McAleenan had 10 each.

Billy Russo was named to the all-tournament team along with Mark Harrington of Central Maine Community College, Budd, Thornton, and Tim McAleenan of Mount Allison.

Women’s basketball

St. Thomas 60, UMFK 57

At Fort Kent, St. Thomas University of Fredericton, New Brunswick rallied from a 15-point deficit in the second half to catch the University of Maine-Fort Kent and rally past the Bengals in overtime to win the title game of the Bengal Tip-Off Classic Saturday.

Jocelyn McIntyre and Elaine McNeice each scored 13 points to lead St. Thomas. McIntyre added six rebounds while Hayley Doney scored 11 and Karla Creighton added 10.

Amanda Davis scored a game-high 20 points for the Bengals. Nicole Corbin had 14 while April Allen had eight points and eight rebounds.

Davis, Katie Green and Ali Duret of Mount Allison, Michelle Parent from Central Maine Community College and Laura Drombolis of St. Thomas were named to the all-tournament team.

At Fort Kent, University of Maine-Fort Kent’s Amanda Davis scored a game-high 22 points and teammate Nicole Corbin added 21, but it wasn’t enough to keep Mount Allison from pulling out an overtime victory in the first round of the Bengal Tip-Off Classic Friday.

Brittany Carter led the Mounties with 17 points, but Katie Green had 12 points and 16 rebounds.

Corbin also dished out five assists, as did teammate Traci Weatherhead.

Women’s hockey

Providence 4, Maine 3

At Providence, R.I., Sonny Watrous scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner at 15:04 of the third period, to lead the Friars to the Hockey East victory Sunday.

The two teams tied Saturday 3-3.

In Sunday’s game, Maine had tied the game 10 minutes earlier on a power-play goal by Vanessa Vani. Sonia Corriveau and Brigitte Laflamme also scored power-play goals for the Black Bears, now 5-3-2 overall, 1-3-2 in Hockey East. Julie Poulin had three assists for Maine, while Corriveau, Kelly Law and Katie Sunstrum each had an assist.

Jenna Keilcher and Kelli Doolin added goals for Providence, 4-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play.

Jana Bugden made 25 saves in goal for Providence, while Genevieve Turgeon made 32 stops for Maine.

In Saturday’s game, Cheryl White scored two goals to spark Maine.

Sheri Wauters also scored for the Black Bears and Kelly Law had two assists. Turgeon and Lundy Day combined for 24 saves on 27 shots.

Katy Beach, Karen Thatcher and Katelynn Laffin had a goal apiece for 3-3-2 Providence. Bugden stopped 16 of 19 shots.

Volleyball

Maine tops Stony Brook

ORONO – The University of Maine volleyball team ended the regular season on a winning note by defeating Stony Brook University 30-24, 30-23 and 30-17 at Memorial Gym Sunday.

Shelly Seipp led the 11-12 Black Bears with 33 assists and four service aces. She also had 12 digs. Maine is third in the America East standing with an 8-4 record.

Leah Guidinger led the Bears with 15 kills and Shannan Fotter added 11. Kaili Jordan had a match-high 17 digs and Jody Connacher contributed 15.

Kate Ruskowski had 29 assists and Claire Lindner had a match-high 20 digs for the SBU 11-17 Sea Wolves. Morgan Sweany had 13 digs.
