MADAWASKA LAKE – The Maine State Police are investigating a series of six seasonal camp burglaries that happened sometime during the night Saturday along the South Shore Road of Madawaska Lake in Township 17 Range 4.
While most of the camp owners have not inventoried their properties, police believe all that was stolen may have been a Craftsman 10-inch compound miter saw from the camp owned by Stephen McDuffie of Caribou.
McDuffie found evidence of the burglary Sunday morning. He had been doing some remodeling at his camp on Saturday and returned to work there on Sunday. Police said McDuffie left his camp after 3 p.m. Saturday.
Maine State Police Trooper Tim Saucier said Monday that the owners of the other camps were Christopher Bell of Caribou, Mary Ann Lynch of Cape Elizabeth, Gerald Anderson of Arizona, Gerald Anderson of Florida and Galen Kelly of Massachusetts.
Saucier said it appeared as if the perpetrator walked from camp to camp, as evidenced by footprints in the snow.
The door at each camp was kicked in. That was the only damage that police could verify.
All of the burglarized places, not far off Route 161, were seasonal camps. Most of the owners won’t be returning until spring, Saucier said. All the camps were located between 583 and 625 South Shore Road.
Six of nine camps in the string were broken into. When McDuffie found what happened at his camp, he checked the others near his and found five more where the doors had been kicked in.
“It had to be someone who knew the camps were seasonal places,” Saucier said. “We have not been able to verify if the person had a motor vehicle in the area.
“The person just walked camp to camp,” Saucier said. “The footprints in the snow were very evident.”
He said a state police technician had found physical evidence that could be traced to someone.
By Monday afternoon, Saucier said no one had been charged, but that the investigation was continuing.
