As she heads into the second half of her final year in high school, Woodland High School senior Michelle Ferry can say without argument that she has pretty much done it all in the sport of volleyball.

She helped lead her team to a state championship her freshman year, and although she couldn’t duplicate that feat the last three years, she has only gotten better.

Ferry, the lone two-time Maine All-State Volleyball first-team selection, heads the 2005 all-state team, which includes two who moved up from the 2004 second team and three first-time first-teamers. The other members are senior Amanda Gray and junior Lauren Kinney from Greely of Cumberland Center, Mount Desert Island senior MacKenzie Lee, and Gorham senior Morgan Carlson, and senior Caitlin Laverriere from Biddeford.

The second team is comprised of MDI senior Brienna Tinker, who was also a second team selection last year; Gorham senior Deandra Guidi; Woodland junior Gina Sears; junior Tessa Churchill of Greely; Rianne Barker, a senior from Washington Academy of East Machias; and junior Cassie Cooper from Cony of Augusta.

Ferry, who was a second- team selection in 2003, led the Dragons at outside hitter with a school-record 222 kills. She also compiled a hitting efficiency percentage of 44.8 with 13 assists, eight blocks, 105 digs, and 146-for-172 serving with 102 serve receptions. Ferry is also a multiple all-conference first team pick as well as a two-time NEWS Athlete of the Week selection.

Gray, a second-teamer last year and in 2003, played 39 games and notched 152 kills out of 262 chances. She also had 38 aces in 115 serves with 102 service receptions and 89 defensive digs.

Carlson was a second-team selection last year. This year, the middle hitter averaged 11 kills per game and finished the regular season with 137.

Lee led the MDI Trojans with 37 aces and 67 kills. She also was an 84 percent attacker with 19 blocks and seven digs.

Laverriere, an honorable mention last year, has played varsity ball for four seasons, three of which ended with her being named the Tigers’ MVP. This season, her service accuracy was 98 percent and her pass accuracy was 92 percent. She notched 35 kills and 25 service aces.

Kinney, a junior outside hitter, played 38 games and tallied 61 kills out of 200 chances. She also had 46 aces and 81 service receptions in 174 serves. She notched 94 digs.

Tinker is back on the second team after serving 173-for-180 with 26 aces and notching 34 digs, 24 kills and nine blocks as an outside hitter.

Setter Guidi averaged 17 assists per game en route to 234 plus 35 aces this season.

Sears, a setter, was 150-for-175 with 39 aces and had 257 assists, 40 kills, and 28 digs.

Churchill is a setter who had 160 assists (out of 319 sets), 18 kills and 17 aces in 31 games.

Outside hitter-defensive specialist Barker was 103-for-115 with 10 aces, 57 kills, 141 serve receptions, and 31 digs.

Cooper led the team in blocks (75), aces (3.0 per game) and kills (3.8) as an outside hitter.

This season’s honorable mention honors go to Woodland’s Courtney Cochran, MDI’s Robbin Dilley, Krystal Kimborowicz and Michelle Gagnon of Biddeford, Dani Netland and Amy Young of Greely, Calais’ Katelyn Peakall, Lizzy Whittemore of Yarmouth, and Washington Academy’s Ashley Tilton.
