Field Hockey Hall to grow by 5 Hoskin, McLean, McDonough, Sickles, Zimmerman get call

The Maine Field Hockey association announced that Janet Hoskin, Estella McLean, Jackie McDonough, Jean Sickles and Sue Zimmerman will be inducted into the Maine Field Hockey Hall of Fame. Each inductee was nominated by a member of the MFHA or the Maine Field Hockey Officials Association.

The Maine Field Hockey association announced that Janet Hoskin, Estella McLean, Jackie McDonough, Jean Sickles and Sue Zimmerman will be inducted into the Maine Field Hockey Hall of Fame. Each inductee was nominated by a member of the MFHA or the Maine Field Hockey Officials Association.

Hoskin played at the University of Maine from 1978-1982. She holds school records for most assists in one game, most career points and career games played. She still holds the marks for career goals (47) and points (104).

Hoskin has been a member of the Maine Field Hockey Association Board of Directors, has coached at Cape Elizabeth High School, Windham High School and Hermon High School. She also directed STYX field hockey camps from 1988-95.

McLean set the standard for female coaches in Maine. She attended Sargent College, receiving an undergraduate degree in Physical Education in the 1940’s. She coached at Farmington High School from 1954-60, compiling a 39-2-3 record, then coaching at UMaine-Farmington from 1966-97. She was inducted into the UMF Hall of Fame in 1995.

McDonough is one of Maine’s most respected field hockey officials. A UMaine-Presque Isle graduate, she has officiated field hockey, basketball and lacrosse at the high school and college levels for over 12 years. She also has coached field hockey, track and basketball at Cape Elizabeth High School. She works as a school counselor at King Middle School in Portland.

Sickles excelled in field hockey at Deering High School and the University of New Hampshire then began her coaching career at Stamford (Ct.) High School in 1955. She coached at Kents Hill in Readfield from 1957-66, coaching field hockey, basketball, skiing and track. After a three-year stint at Cushing Academy (Ma.) (1966-69), she coached at Mt. Blue in Farmington from 1969-87. She took 10 teams to the state tournament. She is a member of the UNH Athletic Hall of Fame.

Zimmerman was an outstanding three-sport athlete at Hall-Dale High School before taking her talents to UMaine-Presque Isle in 1974. Her coaching career included middle-school jobs at Hodgkins, Hall-Dale and Winthrop before taking varsity jobs at Cony, followed by Messalonskee. During her 12-year tenure, she compiled a 175-29-9 record, 9 KVAC titles, 6 Eastern Maine titles and 2 state titles – both with Cony. She was named KVAC Coach of the Year in 1994 and Maine Field Hockey Coach of the Year in 1982.
