CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy of Castine rolled over Gordon College of Wenham, Mass., 68-42 in women’s basketball action Friday to advance to today’s final of the MIT Tip-Off Classic.

The Mariners will face MIT, which downed St. Joseph College of Standish 78-56 in the first game, for the title at 3 p.m. St. Joe’s and Gordon meet in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

In the nightcap, Alyssa Burns of Dixfield led the Mariners with 22 points, former Mount Desert Island star Michelle Gott added 19 points and nine rebounds, and Valerie Robitaille grabbed 10 rebounds.

Beth Pinkham topped Gordon with 15 points.

In the opener, Clara Yuan, Kimberley Soo Hoo, and Karen Kinnaman each posted 18 points for MIT.

Kaylin Regula led the Monks with 14 points, Brittaby Rauscher had 11, and Megan Farrell added 10.

USM, UMF win in tourney

At Farmington, senior Ashley Marble scored 21 points and had 13 rebounds to push the University of Southern Maine to a 75-59 win over Williams victory in the opening game of the University of Maine at Farmington Tip-Off Tournament.

The host Beavers knocked off UMaine-Presque Isle 92-49 in the nightcap.

In the first game,Donna Cowing had 16 points for the 1-0 Huskies of Gorham, the No. 4 team in the country. Katie Frost added 11 points and seven assists.

Colleen Hession led Williams College (Ma.) with 19 points. Megan Stetson had 13 points and Whitney Livermore added 10 points and nine rebounds.

In the second game, Meaghan Cyr scored 19 points to lead the Beavers to victory.

Kari Simpson and Melissa Sawyer each scored 12 points for UM-Farmington.

Sarah Beasley led the UM-Presque Isle Owls with 21 points.

Thomas 77, UM-Fort Kent 60

At Waterville, Toby Martin notched 19 points and four assists to lead the Terriers to a season-opening win in the Dead River Terrier Tip-Off.

Talia Mondalto chipped in with 15 for 1-0 Thomas College, who will face Wentworth Institute of Technology in the tourney’s championship game. WIT beat Russell Sage in the early game.

Amanda Davis had 17 points to lead the Bengals.

At Keene, N.H., sophomore guard David Sontag scored a game-high 27 points to lead Keene State College to a victory over Husson in the first round of the KSC Tip-Off Tournament Friday night.

Husson will take on Colby-Sawyer Callege, which beat University of Maine-Machias 92-84, at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Sophomore forward Nick Drouin came off the bench to score a game-high 14 points. Matt Hickey dished out a game-high six assists.

After taking a 16-0 lead to start the game, Keene State needed an 8-1 run with four minutes left in the game to take the lead for good.

Buddy Leavitt of Guilford led Husson with 15 first half points and 20 total along with nine rebounds. Bucksport’s Jason Harvey scored 18, Phil White added 12, and Tyler Muzzy of Greenville added 11 to go with eight boards. Freshman Jordan Heath of Bangor had 10.

At North Dartmouth, Mass., Friday, junior guard Devon Maiorano led the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting in the first round of the Hampton Inn Classic.

The Corsairs held the University of Maine-Fort Kent to 31.8 percent shooting with 22 shots from the field in the first half to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Stephane Abelard had 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals for the 1-0 Corsairs. Paul Pawlowski had 10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

Edmundas Akstinas led the Bengals with 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Darius Parker of Danforth had 10 points and three steals.

Binghamton tops Maine

ALBANY, N.Y. – Ashley Meffert had 36 assists and 16 digs to help lead the No. 2 Binghamton Bearcats past Maine 30-28, 28-30, 30-26, 30-28 in the America East conference semifinals Friday night.

The win sends Binghamton into Saturday’s championship match with a 19-11 record. Maine winds up its season with an 11-13 overall mark.

Jacki Kane and Brianna Strong each led the Bearcats with 13 kills. Strong also led with four service aces while Megan Hoag had 15 digs. Katie Brody chipped in with 14 digs.

Shelly Seip led the Black Bears with 49 set assists and five aces. She also had nine digs. Lindsay Allman had a game-high 20 defensive digs. Jody Connacher finished with 15 digs.
