WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Arizona Reid had 24 points, including two late free throws, to help High Point University claim third place by beating Maine 70-67 in the William & Mary Tip-Off Classic Saturday night.

Reid also grabbed 12 rebounds.

Junior college transfer guard Jon Sheets led the Black Bears with 22 points and three steals. Senior guard Ernest Turner scored 21 points and junior college transfer Rashard Turner dished out a game-high six assists.

Justin Dunn added 12 points for the 1-1 Panthers.

High Point jumped out to a nine-point lead, but Maine brought it to within 1 with 7:40 left in the half. It took more than two minutes for either to score again, and it was Maine who took the lead off a layup by Ernest Turner.

High Point regained the lead at 24-23 with 4:23 left in the half and never trailed again. The Panthers went into the break up 36-32.

High Point opened the second half with an 11-0 run, with Reid contributing six, to go up 47-32 with 16:21 remaining. Maine clawed back, going on a 16-5 run, fueled by 10 points from Sheets, to come to within three.

Issa Konare fouled Chris Bruff with 40 seconds left, and Bruff hit both shots to bring Maine to within one. Turner then fouled Reid, who sank both his shots. Freddy Petkus missed a 3-pointer – his seventh miss from the perimeter – at the buzzer that would have tied it.

Maine was perfect from the charity stripe, sinking all 18 shots, but it was outrebounded 36-32.

Bears big man Olli Ahvenniemi grabbed nine rebounds, but was held to five points on 1-for-5 shooting from the field.

Maine shot 34.4 percent from the field for the game.
